Description She was exhausted. The tide had pulled her away from the shore, and after what felt like hours of fighting it, she could fight it no more. Losing hope, she gave in to the ocean’s mighty pull, barely able to stay afloat. Finally, with what little energy she had left, she looked up to the sky one last time, and stopped treading water.

Slowly sinking below the surface, she could feel the salt water entering her nose and mouth. She knew it was over. And yet, something happened. Something strange and miraculous that she couldn’t understand. As she relaxed herself and continued to sink down to the sandy depths below, she began to feel a slight tingling on her legs. The water began to feel different across her toes, as if it were moving them gently with each change in the current.

Her eyes still closed in clear acceptance of what she thought was the end, she couldn’t see row after row of scales forming on her legs, shimmering in the sunlight from above the waves. She couldn’t see as her toes began to grow longer, webbing forming between them as her feet flattened, forming flipper-like fins at the end of her legs. But she could feel it. And what’s more, she could feel that the salt water flowing down her throat and into her lungs wasn’t ending her life like she thought it would. And as she felt something moving on the sides of her neck, she suddenly opened her eyes as if reawakening from a deep sleep.

Bringing her hand up to feel the strange slits on her neck, she was startled to feel her hand brushing against flaps of skin she knew shouldn’t be there. Startled and confused, she moved to inspect the other parts of her body that were feeling strange, namely, her legs-or what had been her legs. No, now she gasped as she looked at a pair of long, scale-coated limbs stretching from her waist, each ending in a large fin. What was an even more bizarre part of that unexpected sight was that her legs seemed to be being drawn together as if by their own accord.

She watched in stunned silence, no longer surprised by her sudden ability to breathe underwater, while her legs seemed to merge into a single, solid mass of scales and muscle. Curious, she tried to move it, feeling a sudden burst of water brush by her as the strong tail propelled her much faster than she had ever been able to swim. She was amazed as how easily it had been to move at least a dozen feet through the water, the fish around her scattering as if recognizing a sudden power amongst them. A smile appeared on her face as she whispered a word to herself, softly, “Mermaid.”

The soft spoken word seemed to swell up in her throat as she again said it, this time with more enthusiasm, “Mermaid!”

Finally, as she began to swat her tail, swimming this way and that, she seemed to have a smile on her face while shouting, “I’m a mermaid! A mermaid!”

Excitement quickly overtook her sorrow and confusion as she swiftly moved through the water, seemingly living out a dream of hers as a little girl. And yet, as she continued testing out her new tail, a feeling of loneliness welled up in her, the loss of her friends, her family, what would she do now? Could she ever see them again? Could she ever return to land? How did this even happen? All of the questions running through her mind seemed to suddenly stop when she noticed something large and familiar moving behind a reef, and heard something resembling a giggle…
