I finished the book and your interpretation of Mayda is awesome! I had a bit of trouble picturing how it would look like, but you helped me figure it out. It's just awesome!

Ah man, I just think it's tyranny that the books got re-published! I couldn't grab hold of the Scrivener's moon or the Web of Air book with your truly amazing artwork on the front!

Ah, perfect. I was having a hard time picturing Mayda, and you've fixed this for me. Thank you, sir or ma'am.

Thank you so much for your wonderful visualizations of Reeve's (you-gotta-be-brave-) new world. They, almost as much as his transfixing words, have helped shape the pictures in my head that make the Mortal Engines series not just one of my favorite book series ever, but a wonderful movie series now playing in a head close to me!

This one, in particular, has shaped the way I see Mayda (and, for that matter, the angels) even MORE than Mr. Reeve's descriptions.

Whoa whoa whoa, there's going to be a movie series?!?! (attention, I haven't read Scrivener's Moon yet, so please no spoilers! )

Same on my end. My mental image of the Angels was NOTHING like this. But now, I actually have something solid to base them on.

I especially enjoy the way David Wyatt has captured not just the ominivorous greed of the angels in basing them on gulls (my favorite joke in "Finding Nemo" is the way all that sea gulls can say in that talking-animal world is to screech loudly, "Mine, mine, MINE!"), but hints at their alternate evolution by going back to the pterodactyl dino-roots of birds with the wing claws and fierce aspect and even giving the one I presume to be the elder a bald, vulture-like head. Major coolness, no?

Ah yes. You know, when I first read about them, I imagened them like the gulls from Finding Nemo...
Major? No. SUPREME.

Not a complaint on my part, honestly. I like the English versions better. I mean, his name is FREAKING SHRIKE, not GRIKE.

Got no argument from me there. But after just reading Dan Simmons' "Hyperion", which got the Hugo when published in the late 1980s and features a memorable central villain named "The Shrike", I can, sadly, at last sorta understand why the US publishers of Reeve's better (but later) books, might have been gun-shy about the name. Here's that other robo-stalker, one of many pics of him right on this site: [link]

Ah yes, I remember this explanation. Kinda frustarting, but I get it.
That looks...interesting. It's our Shrike sheathed in nanoarmor.

silkithoughts In reply to Straif5 [2012-04-18 18:11:08 +0000 UTC]

Yep, there are similarities, especially since many illustrators of The Shrike (even the cover artists on some of the four books in which he appears) give it two arms, when Simmons clearly states that he's humanoid in shape but has four arms. Check out the examples of Shrike and The Shrike in my Favorites: [link]

Straif5 In reply to silkithoughts [2012-04-18 18:59:31 +0000 UTC]

Four arms looks better. Kinda reminds me of a Forerunner creation, for the Halo series. Very awesome. Actually, I may just use this idea for a Mortal Engines fic...how does future Stalkers with self-restructuring nano-weave armor sound?

silkithoughts In reply to Straif5 [2012-04-18 19:12:56 +0000 UTC]

Sounds inventive. I also look forward to a confrontation between Shrikes, tho I'm afraid that the former Kit Solent is, as awesome as he became, somewhat outmatched, powers-wise. He'd clearly have my sympathies, however.

Straif5 In reply to silkithoughts [2012-04-18 20:37:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. The Shrike's, what, a demon or something? Kinda hard to outmatch that.
He's certainly more human. Kinda.

silkithoughts In reply to Straif5 [2012-04-20 21:13:43 +0000 UTC]

I guess I'll find out what The Shrike is if or when I read the other books in the HYPERION CANTOS. I don't see me ever warming up to him the way I did with the former-Kit Shrike. BTW, have you read the wonderful short Christmas story Philip Reeve offered his fans as a treat last December? [link]

It provides a look at Shrike and Hester as a wee one in the years before MORTAL ENGINES, and even tho I don't consider myself one of those weepy women, the ending, where Shrike tries to tell a story, brought tears to my eyes.

As for THE Shrike, I know that he/it/whatEVER kicked Arthur Dent's ass in the first round of this cage match [link] a group of pontificating nerds set up [link] But in round 2, he/it/whatEVER got his/its/whatEVER's ass kicked in turn by someone/something called Drizzt Do'Urden, and who knows WTF Drizzt is. So I guess The Shrike isn't invulnerable, after all.

Straif5 In reply to silkithoughts [2012-04-20 22:34:20 +0000 UTC]

No...but now I'm going to.
Wait...someone put The Shrike in a fight with Aurther Dent? Kinda unfair. I must look into this too.

silkithoughts In reply to Straif5 [2012-04-25 19:11:09 +0000 UTC]

I think they were relying on Dent's "inexplicable defiance of death" to carry him through. We see how well THAT turned out...

Straif5 In reply to silkithoughts [2012-04-26 02:17:15 +0000 UTC]

Yep. NSL for our tea-loving friend.
And, actually, that's not the most unfair fight I saw. THAT belongs to Lyra Belaqua Vs. Cthullu. Really? Shesh. And a later one was Tally Youngblood Vs. Katniss Everdeen. And Katniss won. Like HELL that would happen. Blegh.
Now, though, it's got me thinking about all these other fights. Like Fever vs. Deryn Sharp from Leviathan.

silkithoughts In reply to Straif5 [2012-04-26 18:32:11 +0000 UTC]

As dumb as it was, the concept WAS fun and can't help but get one thinking. And I agree: Katniss may be a survivor in the world of Hunger Games, but take her out of it and she's a goner.
BTW: I hope Cthulhu found Lyra tasty. She probably tasted like chicken.

Straif5 In reply to silkithoughts [2012-04-26 20:10:56 +0000 UTC]

No doubt on that. Actually, a fight I'd like to see would be Hester Vs. Katniss. She's probably hesitate when she saw Shaw's face...and that would give Hester enough time to slide a knife into her ribs.

Mmmmm...teenage girl. And, technically, and innocent one. Don't giant multi-dimentional entities have a thing for virgin girls?

Yep. They tend to find them delicious.

As for your take on Hester vs. Katniss, if Hester could get in closer than target range, it would be no contest, face-shock or not.

The colouring is amazing, and I love how you've drawn Mayda-at-the-world's-end from birds-eye view (or should I say angels-eye-view?). The blues on the sea and the greens of Thursday island are just beautiful. I've just started reading the book since I couldn't get my hands on it beforehand.
