Description

Antonio "Tony" Lombardo, born in Naples in 1901, clandestinely boarded a steamship to New York in 1915. Without any particular talents except for an extraordinary cunning, he settles in Broocklyn, living in the backroom of the winery where he works. His astuteness and charm don't go unnoticed by the winery's customers, including some henchmen of the local mafia boss, Vinny Santoro, who eventually offers Tony a better and more prosperous life if he joins his family.
Tony proves himself to be a reliable and unscrupulous man from the start, so much so that he is entrusted with the dirtiest tasks. Upon Vinny's death, who had no blood heirs, Tony becomes his successor. In a short time, he manages to dismantle all rival families and become the king of New York. His power becomes immense, influencing every aspect of New York life.
After the end of World War II, he marries the Polish Jew Zofia Talmon, 20 years his junior, with whom he has two daughters, Antonia (1948) and Maria Concetta (1951). He is arrested in 1955 after the testimony of a turncoat and sentenced to life imprisonment. He dies from an aggressive form of cancer the night before his 55th birthday, after only one year of detention
