Description I have come to the conclusion that there is no "best" SSS configuration for Octane. Different Skins and lighting conditions will require different setups. But for a novice setting proper SSS can be challenging. Therefore I would like to show different settings in octane, so that you can see how these affect the render

The Above Image has the same light settings. Only the SSS Material is different

The First on the left is my personal Favourite, but by far the most complex, as it uses a dual SSS Setup, which works perfectly depending on lighting conditions. Since this Shader is not my creation I can only show you the NGE outline. If you want to have the full details make sure to check out the REDSPECSSS User group

Here is a Preview of the TGX Node System --> sta.sh/03cfkuthbch

The Second Setup is a simple setup that works great in darker settings. You can see the Node setup here --> poserphysics.blogspot.fr/2012/…

The Third is believe or not a simple Glossy material with Specular set to 0.6

The last and final Image is great if you want to give your skin a more satin touch, be carefull not to use to much direct light. Many thanks to a favourite artist for this setup Papertiger

What is the Poser Octane node setting for the "Simple" Glossy Material? Thanks.

okay, crazy idea, time for a bit of Peril.
This girl goes jogging through the woods towards the beach. She stumbles in a sandy culvert, She's SINKING! Its quicksand! OH NO!
With a look of shock surprise and terror, She struggles to escape the quicksand. Imagine her almost breast deep reaching outwards to an unknown rescuer..

Very useful comparison!
Could you provide some details about used lighting?  Is it mesh light or HDRI IBL?

Standard Mesh lights with no additional environmentals. This is actually funny. Most of the stuff I learned from octane and SSS I learned from you!

For me this is a very frustrating subject. I've seen some superb skin renders on this site often using Redspec. Whatever renderer you use the optimum depends on the skin texture, shaders and lighting so there is not a universal answer. I have however found that some textures give more reliable results and I have listed the best on my deviant art site. The most reliable way for good skin is to blend the different elements. So for example you might have bright skin, shadowy skin and shiny skin. You then blend these in a 2D program giving a much more controlled process. Also I find that Octane, Uberlight2 and Reality give clear skin but not the best shadows (too harsh) so I mix different renderers too. Its annoying that after all these years nobody has reliably cracked the secret of good skin. I suppose RGUS must be amongst the most reliable good lighting bloke.
Personally I find people who do great skin pictures annoying because I don't want them just to get plaudits I want them to tell me how it can be done. Teach the man to fish. At least you are giving us some useful analysis of the problem.

I hear you. I think I finally got it right with the skin shaders, my problem lays elsewhere...namely with realistic lighting. After testing at least 20 different setps for skin shaders I still think that redspec is the best. Sure its the most complex, but the results speak for themselves.
