I like the piece. The white really pops out. I think overlapping modes is the best. Personally I think the texture already looks pretty good. The umbrella could be smoother though.

I like the contract between the dark background and the model. Though I understand what some people say that it looks like she is in the sun this way, I don`t really bother. I like the contrast. She looks really pure this way.

It does seem though, that the grass visible down at the border of the dress is brushed on it. I don`t know how you could blend it more with the background, I`m not really good with photomanips. I like the effect like the end of the dress is almost like rough foamy water because the contrast between the bright white and the dark grass.

Now, about layers:

A nice effect is to duplicate the texture layer at least one or two times and set them all to different blend modes. (use more or less opactity depending on how strong you need the effect to be)

A nice effect for textures is also this:
- Above your texture layer, make a new layer and brush some different colours onto it
- blend the colours by using gaussian blur (the stronger the blur the smoother the effect will be)
- You can add some more colour layers if you want, you can also duplicate the colour layer (just like the texture layer)
- Play around with different blend modes for each colour layer to see what it does to your texture(s).

There are also plenty of tutorials and sites on this subject on the internet. It`s sometimes a good idea to look on forum about making signatures or wallpapers because they often use textures, borders and blending too.

Good luck!

Came over here from GimmeFeedback.

When I am looking for the right mode for a layer, I click in the drop down box then select a mode. If I don't like it I then hit the up and down arrows and go through the entire array making note of which ones I like. If I find one I like, but its too much then I play with the opacity of the layer, saturation, color and so forth until I get it to look like I like it. You can also have the same texture on more than one layer and play with different looks on each of them clicking the eyeball (visible toggle) on and off and compare pretty quickly.

Another way to do direct comparisons would be to use the save for web feature in photoshop and that way save the images as flat jpgs without flattening your photoshop file. Save one with one setting and as many as you like with other settings and see which one you like best as you flip through with either win pic/fax viewer or mac preview.

Hope that helps with your question.

I really like the composition of the piece, also I like what you did with the border. But I do think the woman looks out of place with the dark background and the brilliant white. Maybe toneing it down a bit will help with that but also keep standing out from the background.

you did a great job with the texture
all that modes that you mentioned can be very helpful talking about textures
i usually use mine in "overlay mode" but i often desaturate them or change their original saturation
