I think that has to do with resistance to water, something else. If a projectile was fired from a firearm (or similar) powerful enough, the projectile would break into hundreds of pieces before hitting the target.

Lasers, like light, can be refracted in water, so the use of these is discarded. Why not just use torpedoes? That is, the torpedoes were designed to work under water and are the perfect weapons for submarines, why not use them?

Realistically speaking laser is only good for vacuum, because its going to heat up everything in the path, in medium you will have very little energy reach the target. It does seems torpedo and depth charge are only weapon effective under water. But what do you think of EMP?

I thought the term 'tank' came from the fact that the original tracked combat vehicles were initially called landships, but to keep some amount of secrecy on the whole thing, inquisitive soldiers were told they were water tanks, and thus the name stuck.
