Phew, this took a whiiiile~

Gonna turn it into a painting this week, but I wanted to share this first. (funny thing about [lineart -> painting] is all the detail that ends up getting hidden)

Oooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh dear loooooooorrrrrrrddddddddd, your friggin' SKETCHES, MAN. Your LINES. I-I-I just--can I just--AUGHHHHH WHERE DO I EVEN START??!?
Just, good gosh, all the trinketry and the details and your absolutely SUPERB use of line weights that as always just so perfectly add depth and a clear sense of space/order to such a mess of detail that leads to a stunning yet never totally overwhelming composition. Looooooove everything about this, just--just lemme stop talking now so I can stare, alright? ;-;

As long as it doesn't look *too* messy. XD;
I've always wanted to do more "cluttered-designed spaces". I always when I'm playing a Tales game or something and I get to walk through a big ol trinkety environment.

Ahhhhhhh, right??? They're always so much fun... Man, I don't know if you ever played Radiata Stories, but in that game you would walk around and kick everything you saw. Table, chairs, beds, PEOPLE, yes, but if you kicked them too many times they'd challenge you to a fight... and probably kick your ass. xD;

O-oh my. Haven't played it...! You don't get to kick animals I hope (or there would probably be hell to pay with animal rights groups)

Oh wow. The details are just... wow.

Eloquent comment is eloquent.

I love how there's a real mixture of cultures. The maiden in the right-hand corner looks like she could be a Roman water-bearer, while the closed fist slightly to the left seems like it has allusions to Greek mythology... not to mention the fact that that the fist is closed; to me, it symbolises greed and the way humans grasp things. And, yeah. I don't know the character of this alchemist, but since they traditionally pursue gold and long lives, the idea of "greed" seems to fit.

And the masks. The elephant totally makes me think of India. The more humanoid ones make me think of Africa.

I just love how it's all so far-reaching. It makes sense that, if you're an alchemist, you would research all the continents of the world.

Great job!

Grazi. ^^ (it's also worth noting, that this particular alchemist has been successful at decoding longevity, hence his immense stash)

Yeah, I can see how it would! Nice work- the detail is incredible. There's something to catch the eye no matter where I look, and it's all very strongly rendered. I especially like the shading that you've applied to the glassware- it's so very strong.

47ness In reply to wbd [2012-08-03 03:42:26 +0000 UTC]

...I've since erased the pencil shading on those flasks. ;;;
Th-that's just how I do digital painting: spend a ton of time getting the lines right, and then eventually eliminate all those lines in Photoshop.

But this tedium is worth it~! I'm trying to distance myself from "the comic book style" that I often get labeled with, and has kept me from landing top design jobs. (obviously, I'll continue to rock the lines for my comics, like SSnPP...)

Wow, I love the detail of the faces.
Really gives off that steampunk-esque laboratory feel!

Liiiiiips.

I'm just injecting steampunk into a story that didn't necessarily have any. XD;

All those details o____o Iiiieeee think I'm dying XD
Whoo! Other than the fact this is already really impressive line-work, I'm just gobsmacked by how much you're able to fit into this one scene. The giant masks there look so mysterious, that elephant thing, and I can't help but stare at the endless supply of potions ;__;
Best of luck with painting this

47ness In reply to JesnCin [2012-07-31 17:40:43 +0000 UTC]

I think I'll put MORE masks in this thing for the final illustration

The alchemist has been at it for a ~very~ long time, so I had to take that into account when crafting this scene.

High information density images for the win!

For all the times that you've commented on my perspective/pencil/detail you do a pretty bang up job yourself.

And will this "painting" be digital/acrylic/watercolor/other?

47ness In reply to Nuclearkoi [2012-08-06 06:29:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, just for the record, I'm alllllmost done painting it digitally (it only took another week, blah)

Huh, I thought I replied to this one (but it doesn't show up on the deviation page) I'm sure you got it though?

So many little details without looking like a mess, well done!

Haha... methinks I'll soften Ellie's expression in the final version. ~^

The trick to keeping it clean is constantly going back in with the eraser!

Reganov In reply to 47ness [2012-08-02 06:44:53 +0000 UTC]

I was never fond of the eraser, strange considering how much I love ctrl+z!
(probably because I didn't keep my erasers clean D

47ness In reply to Reganov [2012-08-02 06:57:48 +0000 UTC]

I feel vindicated after watching a Gnomon DVD of Puddinhead constantly going back in with an eraser on his (her?) pencil sketch.

I always use kneaded erases now; it affords you a wide range of erasure (hard strokes <--> soft dabs)
