Description This week my comic has been cursed with TOO many potential ideas, but with each great new direction with the plot, another hole must be resolved.

And another.

AND ANOTHER.

So. Basically. It's writer's block. Β¦Dc

Sally Sprocket & Piston Pete Β© 47ness, 2010

...I think I'm going to keep this around as my "404 image".

Thanks for your thoughtful comments!!

(admittedly, the comic itself is drawn in a completely different style; this piece was more an excuse to cut loose and go pure color)

I think the Steampunk look as always been evolving and not stuck in any one era. Sometimes we think it's nothing but earth tones and 19th century because that's the shortcut for a lot of beginners to understand the look, but steampunk can just as well exist in colorful settings (FFVI and FFIX somewhat fit this notion)

You're very welcome! ^^

Interesting, I'm sure whatever style it's drawn in it will be enjoyable to read. ^^

That's true, I've identified myself as a beginner. XD Oh yeah, there's Magitek and Edgar's castle and it's not like Edgar's in brown. XD And you're right, same with FFIX, very lush setting with lots of green.

Ah, the Good Ship Retcon. It's a… not-so good ship. Also, you seem to be doing a bit of ship-sinking here.

But yes, use this for a 404 image.

...

...erright?

(thanks~ XD)

Um…

Abandon ship! Robots and children first! Cast off into the seas of dadaism and poor continuity!

Someday, I may very well have to claim I was going for dadaism to justify why my audience isn't getting the same narrative I see in my head... XD

Just imagine Pete and Sally doing this sketch, and that's how far you may end up falling.

"But I wasn't looking for File 404!"
XD

Good luck conquering the writer's block.
When in doubt, send your characters through a door.
lol I love how Pete's always so calm. xDD

Writer's block. Writer's cornucopia. Soldiering through it is the only option.

Pete's plenty excitable about specific matters just as Sally can be nonplussed at times.

...this is not one of those times. Β¦D;

We went to an Open Day at one university where the tutor basically refused to accept the existence of writer's block. I admire his determination, but uh... I can't really apply it to myself. (yet)

lol I see a spin-off series titled 'Sally Suffers'. XDD

Cooool~
(well, writing is a kind of art; some people are good at just running with what they can at a given point in time)

Makes me think of Edward Gorey's Gashlycrumb Tinies ...though I couldn't inflict 26 fates on Sally like thaaat. (not all at once anyway) XD;

lol He gave the example of a builder saying, "I'm sorry, I can't work today... I really can't feel the spirit of the bricks." To be honest, I can see his point. Then he went on to give us advice like - 1) Write 200 words of dialogue using exactly what you've heard throughout the day, then add to it and 2) Send your character through a door in your house. I guess most of it is mind over matter.

I remember how my friend would always title a blank page Prose ~ Random... and then go on to write nothing. xDD

47ness In reply to kittykittyhunter [2010-12-25 22:58:32 +0000 UTC]

SEND THEM THROUGH A DOOR. 8D

...and make sure to mention a wizard put the door there. [j/k] XD;

A very Modernist approach; the deviation of "Random" is an object to be admired rather than its alleged content.

kittykittyhunter In reply to 47ness [2010-12-26 16:36:19 +0000 UTC]

>__>;; My sister once gave me a very mathematical explanation of how random (in terms of how people use it) wasn't actually random... I've uh - blanked it from my memory. Kai style.

i think the theory is basically summed up as: everything has a pattern, but some patterns take such a relatively long time to start forming that we perceive them as random.

So keep the good humour as Pete.... trying close all holes while the place goes flooded XDDD Well, thatΒ΄s why manage a story sometimes is hard... the many subplots or details tht are always intersecting and so...

But must say, this look hilarious Specially sally... she is quite uneasy XDDDD

Oh I hate that! Writers block or... overabundance... both really suck a lot. I'm in the same spot and I was hoping to not have to ask my husband for his opinion... but... well you know. I love the look of dismay on her face. You totally didn't even need to interject the GHA on her part, LOL.

47ness In reply to Myrretah [2010-12-16 02:43:07 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see. ^~; I try not to lean too much on my friends either since it means forcing them to get in my head (and then vice versa)

Yes- it's all about showing > telling!
Plus poor little Sally is a mute. Only so many ways she can let Pete know how screwed they are...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Myrretah In reply to 47ness [2010-12-16 02:57:33 +0000 UTC]

At least with him he wants to be in my head... and he knows the risks of entering and what doors to shy away from. Even so, we have both been working so much I haven't even gotten a chance to talk to him about non-book things so feel that asking now would be a horrible idea. :sigh: I guess I'll just have to be stuck for a bit. That makes me really able to empathize though. I wish you luck with your upcoming choices and hope that they enrich your tale as much as you wish. I'm sure you'll do better than you think I have faith.

You totally made this epic because he's just hummdeedumbing along while she's in a state of quiet panic. I can just imagine her whipping out an oversized wrench and clobbering him with it when she really needs attention, LOL.
