Description Speedpainting w/ photo reference

I definitely want to revisit this sort of muted color palette for an original piece sometime soon. :3

Aw, thanks. That's the idea with these kind of studies.

That is actually pretty awesome! I love the people shapes, and of course, I always enjoy a muted palette. The contrast in this is really effective as well

You know, it COULD be...? I have an online Norse friend who shared her vacation photos and the city one just inspired me.

Bwa! 'Tis cool! It totally reminds me of the beginning of one of those documentaries where they do all these shots of the cities, and then progress to comment on how totally miserable people are living in urban settlements.

(But in the best possible way, of course. )

My favourite bits are the line of motorbikes and the skyline. Really nice~

47ness In reply to kittykittyhunter [2009-03-01 17:21:07 +0000 UTC]

Ah-huh. Totally know what you're talking about. ;|

The one that always strikes a chord in my mind are the documentaries that warn us about overpopulation and they cut to a telephoto shot of wave after wave after wave of people just walking down a street at peak hours (naturally, New York City, Mexico City, and Tokyo are the most frequent venues for this shot) to remind us we're dangerously close to the carrying capacity of Mother Earth (if not past it...) >_>;

Maybe I shouldn't crave so much doom and gloom in my viewing and just do more good deeds, yeah? ^~;

ANY-HOW. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Glad you like my less-than-usual environment drawings. ☺

kittykittyhunter In reply to 47ness [2009-03-03 21:38:44 +0000 UTC]

But intriguingly enough, 70% of the Earth's land is uncultivated and uninhabited.

But obviously, if you go for crowded cities in said documentaries... ¬¬ Spin doctors!

(It's not all GLOOM and DOOM. I'm sure you do enough good deeds... though how about mixed reactions? It's easy to manipulate people to make them feel one way or the other, but leaving openings in their feelings...)

No problem at all! Your art is awesome, I just... understand very little of it.

But then, art is to be looked at, isn't it?

(gah, I spent the last day and a half trying to come up with a good reply, but um, I've been busy and sleep-deprived... so no such luck ,_, )

Hopefully you'll KNOW when I'm trying to do achieve something great when it doesn't require me to verbally/literally explain the whole backstory + subtext + symbolism in 3 or so paragraphs... XD;;

Ah - but that doesn't always work, you see. Once I wrote this poem which (in my opinion at least) I considered quite stunning (okay, ignore the bragging). It was a Petrachan sonnet, was decasyllabic, used two rhyme schemes (one at the start of the line and one at the end) and contained a lot of alliteration. However, most people wouldn't have picked up on these aspects unless I'd pointed them out, because generally, you don't read or look at something with the intention of studying it. You look at it or read it for some enjoyment (or because the artist has bullied you into it, ).

In my experience, from the poetry and novels that we've studied, deeper understanding of the text comes from talking to the writer, asking them about their actual thoughts and feelings at the time of working instead of relying upon one's own speculation.

Take for example you illustrate a sunset. Although your intention is to practice lighting, I like at your work and decide that you are most certainly describing the descent of man from light into darkness. The glimmer of stars is representative of those good individuals who make it possible for us to retain hope.

Wordsworth, Coleridge, Sheridan, Frayn - all writers who had to describe their work. The same applies to artists of other mediums.

That's one of my many philosophies, anyway.

To cut a long story short... I'd rather read the three paragraphs and enter it with the perception you want me to have After all, they're your thoughts and opinions, and otherwise, I might not know what great aspect I'm looking for, though there will always be things which touch my heart or conscience on sight alone.

And your art is awesome.

47ness In reply to kittykittyhunter [2009-03-07 03:25:14 +0000 UTC]

True. An artist reserves the right to explain her or his work to the public.

(But then, that's why we have art criticism, so other people can rationally explain someone's work for them - which is certainly helpful if that artist was, say, dead for hundreds of years) ;

kittykittyhunter In reply to 47ness [2009-03-07 15:03:59 +0000 UTC]

Totally. But if you do ever get that time machine finished, pop back and find out if Shakespeare existed for me, 'kay? And while you're at it, you can interview as many artists as you want.

^^ It's fun to interpret things in multiple ways...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

47ness In reply to kittykittyhunter [2009-03-08 01:36:30 +0000 UTC]

Haha, YOU! WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE MACHINE?!? T__T; (just an interesting coincidence since I brought that up to someone else recently) :Þ

Sometimes, it just happens because society demands a new interpretation (...the Bible, of course...) ~^

Well, if you wanted to keep it secret, you shouldn't have hidden it in a garage labelled "TOP SECRET". You can hardly blame me for getting curious and wandering in there... I saw this huge thing hidden underneath a massive cloth... so obviously... I pulled it off.
(Great minds think alike.)

Gah. >> Sometimes, people try too hard to be outlandish.

The off-white sky and bleaching of the cars is particularly striking - it's bright, but not pure - rather, it's muggy and hazy and stifling. A good sense of atmosphere for a congested street and city.

I liked the transition between the darker and nearer tunnel (or whatever be) with the far and more lit street. This gradation is very well done ^^

47ness In reply to zkfanart [2008-12-30 00:41:51 +0000 UTC]

One of the things I do to smooth over the gradation at the very end is include an Overlay layer which only has a gradient of the two most extreme colors. :3

Beautiful. Looks like Prague, though it could also look like Dublin. The colour palette is indeed lovely, but I'm not sure about the mix of blue and brown...But, then again, you know my history with colours.

Thanks. I suspect it's Germany. (The blues were probably already fairly saturated so that's why they're showing up as much as they are.)

Dah. Even at 27, my parents STILL tease me about my long-lost ability to be able to identify cars on the road by just looking at their headlights. ..................I was LESS THAN TWO YEARS OLD when I apparently had this ability.

So you can imagine HOW LONG they've been teasing me about it. @__@
