Description “How do we settle this?”

“I propose: Rock, Paper, Scissors.”

“You’re on!”

We both shake our hands up and down three times before gesturing. I turn my hand into a fist as my partner only shows two fingers.

“Two out of three!”

I roll my eyes but accept. The next round I lose with paper against his scissors. Now I get serious and stare my friend in his smiling face. The next round turns up as paper beats rock. I win.

“Fine, you go down first. Do you have your speech ready?”

“Oh boy, do I ever!”

--

I can only see the ladder as I descend it. The attire I’m wearing doesn’t allow much for flexibility. I seem to have reached the end of the ladder as my other foot can’t reach another but I also can’t reach the ground. Gripping the sides as best I can, I let go of the ladder with my feet.

“That was a close one.”

I look up as far as I can to see my partner in the hatch opening.

“You landed right on the LM footpad. Get ready; 600 million people are probably watching us.”

“I know that.”

Taking a moment to look around and I am at awe at the magnificent desolation around us. I look around until I see the Blue Marble above us and let out a single tear for its beauty. Taking a breath, I think about the long term for a moment before pushing it aside for the now.

“I'm going to step off the LM now.”

I take my first step on the ground and watch a powder like substance spread around my foot.

“THAT'S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR - Oh, my God, what is that thing?”

Quickly I scream and point off into the distance before making a static noise right into my mic. As fast as I can in the suit I’m wearing, I climb back up the ladder and push my friend back into the Lunar Module. I follow suit and shut the hatch before flipping the switch which blasts us off into orbit again.

“You’re a real jerk, you know that Neil.”
