This is really nice.
I like the cyber feel to this as well as the overwhelming weight of the buildings and the central focus on the subject. /Main figure.
I find the discussion in the comments to be amusing.
 - especially on a website where pin-up versions of cartoon characters and sexually implicit portrayal of actors in out of character scenes is posted.

  - for those of you who say it isn't art -  Well I agree that the subject isn't that of the creator. But then neither is "The Night Watch" by Rembrandt. Sure he came up with the composition (with some financial nudging by his patrons)  - But the subject of that composition existed. They were real people. does that mean that he was "simply capturing images of things that were already there and the work has no artistic merit" ?
 Was the game credited?
Looks like it. I don't see people citing the list of workmen and architects when they take a picture of a bridge.
I also don't see a lot of credit by Manet when he paints ballet dancers. *Someone* must have designed those sets and done that lighting.
*Someone* must have composed the music the dancers move to as well as the choreography.
Pushok-12   - isn't he just taking a "screen shot" of the ballet?
Shouldn't Andy Warhol apologize to the folks that made those Campbells soup?

NimronKiTel 's comments seem accurate to me. As do the statements by creator of this image.

What the hell do I know though, to me it's just a nice picture.

Sorry, but isn't that a screenshot of the game. Edited - camera binds, no UI, no filmgrain, but it's still a sreenshot of somebody else's work. Work of concept artists, 3d modelers and game designers.

The closest way I can describe it is "game photography". A controversial term to be sure, and while real photography is of course much more finicky, with lenses and lighting and shutter speeds, what gets done in game worlds can also take a decent amount of skill to pull off. Besides having a sense of composition and framing (or for me a gut instinct on what "works") each game has a different set of tools to actually see and modify the shots in real-time, as it's being played. That means hacking and modding and hours of per-scene and per-shot color tweaking to get the specific details just right. Some modders have even added intricately customizable depth of field control, character lighting and even the ability of modifying a game's weathers and fog to bring a very different atmosphere to a scene.

So while I appreciate the DD I can understand when people say this isn't a "real" art, because when it comes down to it I'm literally taking pics of another person's creation. It's a niche hobby and one many don't realize exists. Just... game art is absolutely amazing to me and I want to do it justice. I love exploration, I love to discover the level of detail designers and artists put into these environments and show them off. I have a surprising amount of dedication for this as a hobby and (maybe strangely to some) find it very rewarding. It's helped boost my creativity, and I've learned a lot about photography and design just by practicing in game worlds. To "enjoy" it you kind of have to look beyond the fact that I'm photographing a designed game and just try to be taken in by the atmosphere of individual shots, to appreciate the compositions, the action, the details. There is not much more I can say to argue for it besides that. So I guess if anyone is interested, this is my most current game - showing off Dragon Age Inquisition and its various landscapes, environments and creatures: www.flickr.com/photos/10646799…

Thank you for this long and comprehensive reply. Your comment and other reply to my original post changed my mind on this issue.

Yes, there is not much difference between make in a photo and making a screenshot. Especially now - then games look more and more lifelike. And it's stupid to scream "that's not art".

So you turned me around and now I will watch your work as "game photographer"

That's good to hear

I've actually had some of this work hit Flickr's daily Explore, and some comments were along the lines of "nice photograph!" so either they can't tell or aren't looking hard enough. Definitely, the realism in games is becoming pretty astonishing.

I got that for some of my digital work. And they were totally unrealistic - so maybe it's some kind of weird compliment.

I don't know, to me it's not that different from making a photo... The subject may not be yours, but you need hours of tweaking to obtain such a screenshot.

NimronKiTel In reply to SymphonyofSparkles [2015-03-15 16:49:15 +0000 UTC]

Throwing this out there from the viewpoint of a photographer; the subject is never truly yours unless it's a mannequin or an inanimate prop.  Even if all you photograph is trees; that's a work of nature.

Hell, even that mannequin was made by somebody else... So I'd say that with very rare exception (Self portraits, for example); photographers never shoot their own subject.

In other words; well thought-out argument siding with this artist; I believe you're right.

That's fine. If there was a way to not have this account eligible for DD nomination I would do it. It's hard to categorize this kind of thing because of what I said in the earlier comment. No matter how many color tweaks and hacks I do to gain control of the game-world there is still the original concept design and artists that have presented that world to me. I'm just trying to bring to light the details that so many will miss and try to show it off in an interesting way. It may not count as a "true" art but as a niche hobby I'm finding it's satisfying and rewarding and I'm going to keep at it.
