Description This was our center piece, our firepower, our spearhead, and our tank! My dad is in the cupola in this picture. This Stug III Ausf. G was captured by the Americans during D-Day. This tank was credited for destroying 16 tanks before it was knocked out by a mine, which only blew the tracks off. After the war, it was sent to the US for evaluation. Later it was sold to a private buyer and asked if anyone wanted to do the restoration for it. My dad and a couple friends stepped in, and four-five years later it was running. Later my dad used it in re-enactments, and in the middle of the battlefield it would usually breakdown; normally from overheating or the messed up transmission to freeze or jammed gears. It was fun while it lasted, but later sold to a private collector in which he blew the transmission and engine out. But still, it is still the king of the battlefield(only in my experiances in re-enacting). Please comment!

Ein Wulf ist auch meine liebling. The "Stug" is also a favorite vehicle. Like most mechanized vehicles, they are prone to breakage at some point and time. I like your site.

Thanks, and breakage is part of the experience. Thats what all armys do when stuff falls apart, they get it fixed one way or another!

(Hello, here speaks the envy! I mean, how cool is that that the own father has a tank - probably in his garden? Ignore this comment please, but I'm somewhat impressed ... oO)

My dad didn't really own the tank, just four guys together owned it. I wished it could be a lawn prop, but we sold it back in 1997 to someone. But tanks for commenting!

It's sad that it was sold later, but who can say from himself that he had owned an original tank?

5KPGD In reply to BlueHunter [2010-04-11 23:43:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but it suffered from many mechanical problems in engine and transmission failures, thats why we sold it. It would of cost us a lot of money to fix it good.

An awesome tank. In the CHG the germans have a Hetzer that they restored from a metal dump or tank graveyard. It runs like a charm, and is a pain to face on the battle field. Trust me being in the Stuart we gave a good fight and took it out once or twice. But our M8 couldn't stand a chance. haha!

So you reenact huh? For who?

I'm going to join the 2nd Infantry Division and later I want to join the 12th SS Panzer Division.

Oh, that's cool though. I saw that they had the Hetzer, Panzer, and three half tracks at the Camp Roberts event. It was a really cool experience.

I saw the Stug upclose and personal and my dad offered me to peak inside. I was about four and I didn't want to because I thought once I go in I couldn't get out. I regret that moment for life, it was very cool and hot. Very hot indeed.

Man it would've been awesome to have taken a peak inside the tank! And true to that my friend. It's anything but cold in a tank. Hahaha!!!

It gets real hot in this tank, no ventilation at all and the ammo get s hot too when fired.

Well it was a little different in the Stuart. We had the top opened the whole time. So it was okay to bare. haha!

warman707 In reply to 5KPGD [2009-04-19 06:42:19 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Always an issue in tanks though. The stuart's able to have the whole top hatch open, unlike some German tanks that just have the small one man hole on top of the tank. But I bet it was an awesome experience for you though.

I was never inside it, but seeing it in action was fantastic! That tracks and torsion bars was the main problem. They always had problems.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

warman707 In reply to 5KPGD [2009-04-19 07:24:57 +0000 UTC]

Another problem too. Ours ran out of gas (perfectly normal in most standards ) And our fuel filter kept clogging up. So our engine kept over heating and what not. But it's always epic to see a German tank in action on the battle field.

5KPGD In reply to warman707 [2009-04-19 07:37:38 +0000 UTC]

Running out of gas is normal, but if it happens too quickly then you may have a problem. The transmission, torsion bars, and cooling systems were all bad to start with but the show must go on!

warman707 In reply to 5KPGD [2009-04-19 07:42:24 +0000 UTC]

True to that my friend! But we only had to refuel once. And we had to make a few quick fix up jobs with cleaning out the filters on the field and all that. But it's all part of the experience!

No problem, it was the center of the whole entire year of re-enactments. I only saw it twice, and been in it once. Man how it is cramped fighting in that thing, I had a hard time getting in and out!

Captain-Varro [2009-01-21 04:23:49 +0000 UTC]

The Germans came up with so much awesome hardware. Did you give it synthetic oil? That would have helped cooling a little.

Though if I got my hands on it, I'd give it a nice big turbo diesel engine and a 6 speed manual transmission.

Anyway, I really like the effects used on this photo and how all the details of the tank are easy to see.

5KPGD In reply to Captain-Varro [2009-01-28 00:38:17 +0000 UTC]

I think we tried that before we sold it, anyway it was domed from the start with complicated machanics. But still, it sits in my mind when I last seen it. Huge thing, we used a military tank trailer and a semi-truck to tow it.
