Description A long time ago, I was found in an alley way. I had no name, no home, no voice. I didn't know what speaking sounded like.

Then he came along.

His kind smile and cold eyes were offset by his manners.

He asked me, in a soft and subtle voice, if I would like to work for his master, whoever that was. I couldn't help it, I said no.

His shocked face made me wonder if he was going to hurt me.

Then he knelt down, in the mud and filth, and smiled kindly at me. "I don't ask you much, just if you would like a house, no, a home, warm meals, and a safe place to stay. I know what you're hiding, little one."

I gasped and quickly looked away. I covered my ears, blocking out the sound. I shook my head, my body trembling.

Then I felt his hand on my head. "It's alright. You will be welcome where I take you. Nobody will ever need to hurt you so long as you stay."

And so, I wound up becoming a member of the staff at Phantomhive Manor.

Today is my first day. I don't know what I'll be doing, but I hope I do something useful to them.

I tugged on my uniform Sebastian, the butler who'd come to see me in my dark hole in the ground. I looked at myself and sighed.

I was just turning around when I stopped.

Sebastian smiled at me. "Now you look all clean and like a girl. The young master would like you to have this."

I blinked and looked down. They were earmuffs. Fluffy, white, soft earmuffs to help me block out all the noise. I took them, blinking back tears, and slid them over my ears and could hear the difference.

I smiled, touching my chest over my heart. "Thank you."

And so, my first day began.

I was told to first help May-Rin, Baldroy, and Finnian with the grocery shopping. So, I went along with them, being sure to stay quiet and huddled in my corner of the wagon with my coat tightly wound around me.

I looked to the side and saw snow. It was the first time I'd seen it, but I remained calm on the outside. I saw no reason to think it was safe to get excited.

At the market, I stood outside with Finnian and waited for the other two to come out.

"So, what's your name?"

I blinked and looked at him and realized I hadn't said a word yet. I threw my arms up and waved them around as I tried to explain I didn't know. I couldn't make more than little noises until, suddenly, Baldroy came over and pressed his hand into the top of my head.

"What the bloody hell are you two doing out 'ere?!"

"Ah...."

He popped a stress mark and turned me to face him. His breath stank of really bad tobacco and I covered my mouth. It was a horrible smell.

"DON'T 'AH' ME!!"

I nodded.

"Good, now pack up the stuff, we're headin' home."

I was forced to sit in the back, facing the direction we were heading away from. I watched the snow and wondered if it was as cold as the ice on the fountain at "home"....

They hit a bump and my earmuffs slipped off. They fell on the road and I jumped down, running over to grab them. When I turned around, they were lost in the falling snow. I quickly put them on and ran after them, remembering how we'd come.

I finally slowed down from lack of air and stood still on the side of the road. I watched the falling snow as puffs of mist escaped my lips. I finally slapped myself and started running again.

The four petticoats were getting in the way and the dress was starting to become wet with melting snow. My boots were heavy and wet and I finally collapsed on the front pathway to the manor.

I fell into a deep sleep, not knowing what and where things would lead to. I just hoped someone would find me before I froze.
