Description Totally had to heavily and shamelessly reference the pose.

Part of the fragmented memories of Sparkz. poor guy.

Thanks to the super awesome

and

help supplement the time before Sparkz was... well, Sparkz. and the reason he's missing the paw in those pictures is creative licensing, btw. you don't wanna see a gnarled paw drawn. it's nasty.

If you don't have a weak stomach, you can read on for Reyssa, excuse me, Spark'z little history lesson...

But don't say i didn't warn ya.

This is your last warning...

So what is it you’ve heard so that we can set the record straight? Something about after he was born, he and his sisters were adopted, but the parents couldn’t afford to give him the surgery for his eye so they took him back to the orphanage? Sorry, but somebody lied to you. None of his sisters made it past the first week. He was actually the lucky one, as only his eyes were affected. They spent all their money trying to save his sisters before the red eye showed up on him, so the dad took him to the park instead of the hospital or the orphanage. I don’t know why he did it, but that’s what he did.
So he has this green eye, right? Did you know he can’t see anything out of it at night? It’s not all the great in the daytime, either. The red eye’s got the opposite problem…well, sort of. The thing is, he has something like thermal vision in it at night, but it can’t detect anything in the presence of light. Strange disease, I tell ya. No one really even knew about it while he was a little kitten, I mean, he never went to any hospitals or anything, so he didn’t even know he was essentially half blind or whatnot. Either way, he’s not glaring at you, he just has to squint really hard when he’s looking, is all.
He does have great hearing, though, which counterattacks the effects of his poor vision somewhat, but his strongest sense definitely comes from his nasal cavity, hence his moniker. ‘Sparkz’? No, his real name. Yeah, she gave him a name just before she sent him to the hospital. Funny thing is, no one knew this name for him and they all used it anyways; Reyssa. I can’t remember the language off the top of my head, but it has a few connotations. Depending on how you say it, it’s either an insult or a cute pet name. It basically means “dog-like” or “sniffer”. I mean, he literally sniffs at everything, mostly because it tells him the proximity of how close something is to him so he doesn’t run into anything.
Well when he was in the park, there was this pack of stray dogs there that found him sniffing around, confused. They took a liking to him for whatever reason and taught him how to hunt and stuff. They always seemed to get a kick out of watching him catch food. Weirdos. He is a great hunter, though… didn’t have a food dish or a saucer of milk waiting for him, so it was a necessity. Anyways, so one day a few years later, I guess, a dog catcher nabbed him. You’d think they only went after dogs, but people would complain about the lack of birds in the park and they decided to blame him for it. Even though they were right, they had no proof, so it’s still not fair.
There wasn’t any room in the feline ward, so they ended up putting him in a kennel with a few dogs. He didn’t know any better, he’d been around dogs since before he could remember, so he wasn’t really prepared for that month. I’ll spare you too many details, but basically, every night they would trade using him as a cushion. Every time he tried to get away, they’d gnaw on his paw until he stopped. Now this went on for about a month, so the fact that they only did it to that one paw was a bit of luck because they might has escalated to another before long. As luck would have it, though, somebody came to adopt the dog that was using him as a pillow at the time; a mutt named Zachery. As soon as the door opened, Reyssa smashed Zachery in the muzzle with his gnarled paw and ran out of the cage, escaping out of an opened window. Now Zachery was offended by this. He had never gnawed on the kitten’s paw and only used him as a cushion when the others were awake. You’d think Zachery would let it go, considering, well he was being adopted and didn’t have to stay in the pound anymore, but unfortunately for Reyssa, this wasn’t the case.
Back on the street, Reyssa tried to find his way back to his park, eventually succeeding after a few… hiccups along the way. He’d lost a lot of flexibility in his injured paw and pounding the pavement for miles wasn’t exactly helping matters. In the meantime, Zachery decided to round up his old gang to help him track Reyssa down so he could teach the kitten some manners.
As it turns out, it happened to be the pack that Reyssa had been with, so they found him in no time, resting in a tree. Frightened, confused and disoriented, he dove out of the tree, trying to run away, but with his injured paw, was quickly surrounded by the pack who treated him as though they’d never seen him before. Zachery dragged Reyssa by the paw to a water fountain. Around this time, the epitome of the word “mutt”, Socks came over to investigate all the noise. Offended by the display of cruelty of his genus, Socks knocked Zachery off Reyssa, and grabbing him by the scruff of the neck sprinted off to safety, losing the pursuers in a construction site.
The immediate danger quelled, Socks put Reyssa down, attempting to examine his raw paw. Out of a combination of instinct and terror, Reyssa took a swing at Socks and hobbled off.
So fast forward some time to the incident at the pet shop. So the story goes that Reyssa was starving, found the bird in the cage outside, ate the bird and then the pet shop owner pulled a Hammurabi on him, right? You know, eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, paw for a bird? Well, the truth gets a bit deeper than that.
See, first of all, Reyssa was indeed hungry, but not enough to resort to taking a bird out of a cage. Understandably, he despised cages. The bird actually called him over and asked him to end it for him as he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life in that round prison. Instead, Reyssa decided just to open the cage to free him. The bird had been locked up so long that he hadn’t even considered that as a viable option and thanking Reyssa, started to fly away. The shopkeeper meanwhile runs out with a knife, meaning to scare Reyssa off, afraid for his bird’s safety. It wasn’t just a pigeon (I mean, not that that should matter but Macaws are decidedly pricey). So the bird flies off and the man’s angry, he’s swiping the knife around, trying to scare Reyssa off. Wasn’t even aiming anywhere near him. He’s a pet shop owner for cripe’s sake he’s not gonna want to hurt a cat. The thing is, Reyssa’s lame paw is starting to bother him again and he suddenly has a flashback to the kennel. Whether it was a lucid or subconscious decision, Reyssa threw his paw in the path of the blade at the last second and... well yeah. The shop keeper’s story didn’t make a lick of sense to the cops and there was no trace of the bird so they came to their own conclusion and Reyssa, with the sudden physical trauma eventually bought the story. There’s really no way of knowing for sure if he remembers what really happened… But personally I hope he never remembers… after all, he has enough to feel guilty about.

What?

Oh yeah… he got his revenge on Zachery. But I’ve worn out my welcome and that’s probably a story for another time. Good day!

...

Told ya. and yeah i've got issues. but so does everyone else.

Aww the whole story seems sad. Poor Sparkz. I was thinking how content the puppy seemed snuggling with Sparkz, but it seems it wasn't a good thing for him So sad. You did incredible work on this though and a great write up my friend on the history. Did you create the dog character yourself? Very impressive work as always.

i did my job if it seemed cute until you read the description.

the dog doesn't even have a name... all i know is it never leaves the pound. Sparkz obviously does, though. poetic justice, i guess. XDDDD

sometimes i wonder why Sparkz had to have such a terribly sad story, but then i remember that it's those that have a longer journey up that really appreciate making it to the top of the mountain.

thank you very much, O'Hara!!!

LOL i had to do research for this reply, but it seems i've drawn 17 "happy" pictures of Sparkz a couple neutral ones and very few of this kind. XDDD considering this one takes place beforehand, , i suppose its a way of saying how far he's come since those days.

i guess it's kinda wishful thinking for me. cuz i know i will be SUPER HAPPY in FLORIDA even if i FAIL at EVERYTHING from then on out, i'll be happy as a failure there because i'll be 'free' XDDDD
so yeah. XD just kind of a reality check that life doesn't always suck even if that's all you can remember at the time. XDDD

but yes, he has a sad story

Well that is true. I don't recall many depressing ones. I guess it is just the story in general that was so sad about him. I love the happier times. haha.

Aww well you being super happy is what is important my friend and I hope that Florida is going to do that for you. You deserve it my friend

i just got awesome news. i'm gonna be completely alone on Thursday!

i'm more than likely just gonna order a pizza tomorrow and not eat it and eat some of it on thursday and just... decompress. that sounds lovely. XDDD

and without anyone around, i don't have to put up the fake holiday cheery charade which is getting increasingly more difficult to pull off.

guilty as charged. XDDD though i'm not sure it's even possible to have a happy backstory with a character that's missing a hand.

but the next story will be happy(er) i swear XDDD

..... ........ Awjeez Sparkz ;.; This makes me wanna draw out some more scenes from the story (if you don't mind of course) 'cause now I'm all inspired. Socks would be very mad about those dogs turning on Reyssa (love the name btw!) 'cause dogs are suppose ta be loyal (I could see him ranting now XD) Although this is a fictional story some parts seem all too real, concerning the types of horrors strays often encounter. gah now you've inspired me to draw AND write, I really should write more...I haven't written anything for a couple months now. LOVE the story and love the art!

8OV In reply to SocksTheMutt [2012-11-17 23:11:19 +0000 UTC]

i could NEVER say no to Eggy

i always thought of Reyssa/Sparkz's life as kind of an exaggerated version of ...personal experiences... the pillow thing OBVIOUSLY exaggerated, but ...

i definitely plan i writing more when things have calmed down in all aspects and the Sparkz/Socks pictures that you have drawn before all this make it SO easy for me to do things with it, particularly how you showed Sparkz gradually getting to trust Socks (which i'm not sure was intentional or not, but yeah i SOOOOO wanna write about his life before getting adopted)

and i'm sure strays go through this sorta thing often.

you're toooooo kind

i need to turn this into a PROPER story(which i definitely will when i get the time) and if inspiration begets inspiration it's a nice cycle that i won't be upset with continuing.

i just hope you trust Socks in my literary hands as much as i trust Sparkz in your artistic!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SocksTheMutt In reply to 8OV [2012-11-17 23:25:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I picked up on that...the personal stuff I mean. The best stories, and characters, always have a deeper meaning to them. I've never really given Socks' past much thought since he's more or less a "persona"/reflection of myself so it seems sorta strange but...I'm all sorts of inspired now. XD Seeing that he's part wolf I can never figure out if I want him in the woods or in the city or somehow moving back and forth between both. XD I just started writing again earlier this spring thanks to my LK and Scar obsession, and thus far those are the only stories on my DA page, LK fan fics (all about Scar of course XD) I have been messing around with a plot for that comic about Socks but it's slow going, frankly I've been in somewhat of a slump this week and not drawing as much as normal...but this story has inspired me so thank you! And of course I trust you with Socks! :3

8OV In reply to SocksTheMutt [2012-11-18 06:24:02 +0000 UTC]

That's another reason why Socks and for that matter, Jackfruit are so intriguing to me. the mystery that they offer even to their creators allows for endless possibilities, unlike with Sparkz who, decidedly has a set of rules he has to conform to, regardless of how broad a range they are, he still has to conform to them. Whereas Socks has the ability to be the silent feral type that just kinda chills one moment and a chatty street mutt the next and everything in between okay so that's essentially what Sparkz is as well, but you know what i mean

riki is more the 'persona' of me who i unfortunately can't really articulate or show (even though i have huge comic devoted to riki that will unfortunately NEVER see the light of day XDDD) while Sparkz is....well there's definitely a lot of me that went into him, but at the same time, i never considered him an alter ego per se...
i'm flattered that you would trust me with him! ever since you started drawing them together (perhaps even BEFORE you started drawing them together) i had this concept in mind for pre-Furrball Sparkz and when i first encountered your character i was like "THAT" XDDD funny thing is i never told you about it, but you still ended up going that route when you drew that very first tree picture when Socks was saying 'hi'. XDDD

of course i'll eagerly await your Socks comic and in the meantime to keep my mind busy during the hardest time of the year, i plan to be very busy with the next incantation of Sparkz' adventures in Socks land.

i still have to get that totally unrelated (well, not so much unrelated) controversial comic done with them...

Maybe him talking to the bird in the cage before he liberates it?

Please don't take that the wrong way, I'm glad you posted it, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't tug my heartstrings, which I'm sure was the intention.

Actually your intentions were to clearly adapt *wahyawolf 's drawings to story form, and this scenario fits it very well, but it doesn't make it any less depressing.

Still very good, though I find myself hoping that this was just an exercise and not part of your real plans for Sparkz. His story is sad enough as it is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

8OV In reply to GuiMontag [2012-11-17 20:33:21 +0000 UTC]

my brotha, it is what it is. XDDDD
this is the G- Rated version, of course.

i'm really not sure what the intention was... i really think i was trying to be as ... well objective as possible, which is why i choose the POV from an anonymous narrator.

you know me well enough to know when something is self-medicating and this is kinda testing the waters. Sparkz missing paw has sparked ( ) questions and i always really wanted to fuse the feral (Reyssa) with the anthro (Sparkz) and if one can get to a better place (which Sparkz is clearly better off in every aspect than Reyssa ever will have been) there should be no shame in being able to articulate how far up the well one had to climb to get to sunshine.

i dunno, to be able to NOT be ashamed of a past that wasn't your fault, makes it easier somehow to control the rage that instead comes out in inopportune places and in many forms.
and while very few will ever know the TRUE inspiration behind Sparkz (wow, only you and one other person besides me know) i think... in some way, shape or form i don't have to be ashamed of ... yeah. cuz it wasn't my fault. (and i gotta thank you fro that realization, of course, brother)

unfortunately, for fiction's sake, the difference between us is Sparkz eventually GOT his revenge and mine would only land me far, far away from CHQ.

and i can't let Eggy take the heat for those two fantastic renditions. I kinda commissioned them (premise and all) beforehand it made it easier to write this.

and for what it's worth, as much as i didn't wanna make you sad, i'm glad i did this, because it's over. it was one of the hardest things to do but... yeah.

p.s. i'm totally NOT doing the revenge pic. XDDDDD

thanks bro!!!

GuiMontag In reply to 8OV [2012-11-17 21:45:01 +0000 UTC]

As selfish as it sounds to me, I'm very glad to hear you're not doing the revenge pic.

I'm guessing that the depressing nature of the story clouded my judgement and prevented me from being able to determine that this was indeed a self-medicating piece, since I was always able to detect that sort of thing before...I probably should have guessed that right from the start since this is clearly more about the feral version of the character instead of the anthro one you use in your main stories. It's interesting to see you write about that side of Sparkz though, and you've succeeded in making me feel for him by far the most ever since you created him.

It is sad and it made me feel sad, but I don't care about my feelings, all I care about is that it was able to get its intended job done. I do get the meaning behind this fully, and I'm incredibly happy that things are much easier for you now, bro.

no, it would be insensitive of me and a bit sociopathic to say that there wasn't an emotional appeal in there, so you're not off base about your initial reaction there...

i guess it all goes back to me initially not seeing the ending of "Abeogi" as sad because i was looking to the future instead of the present, because my mind tends to linger in the past or focus on the future whenever the present gets too... deep. XDDD

that is why you will forever be my ONLY choice of what position you've always had when it comes to my writing

while Sparkz is perhaps a sympathetic character, I really plan on fleshing out a bit more than tat from him in the future... because he's so much more than a victim, and i rarely have articulated that. and he's no angel, either... meaning i might have to allude to a few things he's done without trying to justify those actions and let the reader make up their own minds as to how to feel about him afterwards. that's another thing you've brought to my attention without actually saying it, as you're a genius about throwing out the clues and letting my connect the dots to see how far it goes. XDDD which is yet another reason you're so great at what you do.

ahhahah and now i'm reminded of the initially conversation we had about him being "half toon"? strange that that actually ended up... kind happening.

for what it's worth, i'm sorry it made you feel sad. It's always difficult for me to really see the emotional toll it can take on a reader because by the time i've posted it, i've become so far removed from it emotionally. but either way... eventually there'll be a nicer ending, right?

I know there will be a nicer ending eventually, I have faith in you and always will.

You know, I've always felt there was a lot more to Sparkz than what was revealed in your past writings ever since he broke out of his initial status as a TTA OC (I know you didn't intend him as such, but that's how he'd appear to any 'outsider') and it's things like this that make me confident you could write an entire book about him and him alone, completely removed from any established characters...of course, even though that's probably not part of your plans I'm still elated to hear that you'll be expanding on him a lot more.^^ Furrball's story is concluded, now it's Sparkz's turn, right?

I never got the impression that Sparkz is an angel, he is a former juvenile delinquent and all that, but it'll be definitely interesting to see him being something other than a victim 'onscreen' for once.

And don't worry about making me sad, like you said this was something you needed to do, and the fact that you can actually make me feel something with your words is only a testament to your skills.

As much as you say I can get inside your head, I obviously have no idea what you were thinking about when you're train of thought was derailed, but I definitely know for sure that I can't wait for you to get started either.

Though isn't it technically "next week" now? Unless you're going by a European calendar, in which it won't be next week for another 7 hours 40 minutes...
