Description
My entry for the contest that #WaterHorses and #Unicorn-Club are holding.
I really love how it turned out. I think it's my best so far.
It took me over 5 hours of non-stop work on this to finish.
The colours were especially fun to play with

The young grey mare had yet to realize the trouble she'd gotten into as she pulled her heavy body onto the beach, in hopes her mate was close by. She kept close enough to the water that she could still return if need be. She whinnied a soft little cry, but her mate's whinny never replied. She had always dreamt of becoming a land creature. Never had she imagined that this would be her only chance to feel as if she were one.
The sky took on a different appearance as day began to turn to night. And the first stars arose from the black abyss.
A rustle in the grass alerted the mare as she awoke from a restless dream. She concentrated on the tall dark grass. Who was in there? She let out a quiet whinny.
At once the animal reacted. It was a famished wolf. It had wandered for days without food, and this was it's chance for a replenishment. It bolted for her throat, but the mare lashed her powerful tail and spiked the beast in the muzzle. The wolf lashed back at her, inducing a large gash on her belly. The blood began pouring as she cried out for help.
At last, her mate had heard her and bolted into action. The immense black stallion chased the wolf, nipping at it's tail. The pursuit went on until the wolf gave up and ran off back the way it came, never to come back again.
The stallion stood there looking at his poor mare. She didn't have much more time. The wounds on the mare were severe. She would never survive this.
He laid down next to her. A comforting whinny escaped his saddened lungs, as the mare shut her eyes forever.
