Ok, I know I'm breaking my own rule about not complaining about every little thing about Sonic, but this really irritates the hell out of me and I can't stay silent: Why the hell do you guys like Roger Craig Smith as Sonic's voice actor?
He sounds gruff and like he is in his 30's. Sonic is a fucking teenager He is also a cartoon and should have a cartoony sounding voice. In my honest opinion, Ryan Drummond was my favorite voice actor for him, and I love Jun'ichi Kanemaru's faithful and fun vocalization of the character.
I think my biggest problem is their consistency. One of the shining things about Mario, aside from gameplay, is that their voices remain consistent and faithful to the character. Yes, I know Mario had different voice actors but they were for non-cannon TV shows and those failed CD-I games. However, the -only- character in the Sonic franchise that remains faithful to his character is Mike Pollock. Yes, I know he had a different voice actor, but sadly he is deceased, and I feel that Mike didn't stray too far from his voice in Adventure. Don't even fucking get me started on Tails...
Anyway, tl;dr version, I don't hold a grudge against Roger, I just do not care for his voice for Sonic, plus there was no stamp for this on dA yet. Someone had to say it. And that is why I have warned my Dad not to freak out if he hears Sonic talking in Japanese on Generations.
Lol let the flaming commence! Egh seriously though, if you're going to flame me, it just shows you're not mature enough to fully understand my argument, nor have any respect for me. Did I flame you? Then don't do it to me. Polite debate is ok but don't be surprised if I don't have an answer. It's a matter of preference.

Roger sounds awkward as Sonic. Jason's take on Sonic was best, along with Junichi's. From best to worst: Jason & Junichi, RyanΒ & Jaleel, and Roger.

In Colors and Generations he was plain horrible,he sounded cocky,whiny,way too deep and like an uptight cowboy.
However alot of things changed between Generations and Lost World.
I think he has calmed down n smoothed it out and i do now honestly love him(not as much as Jason though).
Voice actors always improve,Jason wasen't great at the begining of Sonic X either.
Just sayin that it's a huge diffrence between how Sonic sounded in Colors and how he sound in Lost World!

Agreed. Sonic is a cocky fast Teenage hedgehog, not a Deep voiced adult. I really think Jason did it perfect for Sonic, and Shadow for that matter, but yeah, Roger just doesn't work for Sonic.

I truthfully LOVE Jason Griffith as his voice actor, he didn't ruin Sonic, 4Kids did by giving him that sucky script for Sonic X. Roger..... I just want Jason back. >3<

Jokes aside, yeah, I honestly don't know what was wrong with Ryan and Jason. There was no good reason to make the voice change, I mean, I can understand them giving Shadow a different V.A. just because Sonic and Shadow has their moments where they sounded similar (but Shadow's new voice is even worse than Sonic's new voice)
At least Japan has it right.

I just don't know why they had to change the WHOLE voice cast all over again. Can't they ever just change one V.A. and be done with it?

And hey, I do think they did a good job on Knuckles' new voice. It sounds a lot like his old one but more professional, in my opinion.

Sonic is only a teenager, and now he does sound like he's in his 30's. I had the same thought. Although I don't hate Roger's voice for Sonic, it just doesn't fit him very well.
I've liked all of Sonic's video game voice actors over Roger.

Mmhmm! I don't hate him either, I just think it was kind of an odd idea of them to cast him instead of recasting Ryan or even sticking with Jason. They were both awesome for the role of Sonic. Roger just does not fit his role naturally.

Exactly! Honestly, Jason was my favorite for voicing Sonic, and I didn't like Ryan as much, but I still like him. They at least sounded fairly similar, just Jason's was less hyper and lower pitched. Even so, the least they could have done was bring Ryan back....
On a scale, these are my opinions on the voice actors:

5. Jalee (His job of voicing in Sonic Underground I liked more than Roger's, but I didn't like his voice as much in the other two shows.)

I don't like Roger Craig Smith as Sonic's voice either; it sounds too mechanical and weird in my opinion. I don't know why everyone was so uptight over Jason's voice, he was a very good Sonic. Granted, Ryan and Jaleel are still my favorite voice actors for Sonic, but Jason actually sounded pretty decent. In fact, his voice was the only voice I could tolerate once Sega started using 4Kids voice actors. As for Juinichi's voice, I really love listening to it. In fact, whenever I started a new file on any of my Sonic games, I would set the primary language (either text or voice) to Japanese just for kicks.

Thanks! Funny thing is, eventhough most people associate Jason with 4Kids, believe it or not, some of his best roles were in anime NOT dubbed by 4Kids. I think one of his best roles was when he was the voice of Tatsuha Uesugi in Gravitation; he pretty much cracked me up in that series, too bad the anime/OVA were so friggin short and that Tatsuha was only in a few episodes, otherwise we'd get to see how awesome he really was in that show , and he really did sound alot like Sonic there! Gravitation was dubbed by Right Stuf and had pretty good voice actors, the only complaint I have about it is that the series was too short and literally cut out too many good characters.

Yes, Roger Craig-Smith is a fail. I changed it to Japanese when I was playing it too. But, you know who's worse than Roger Crap-Smith? Kirk Thornton. Out of any of the new voice actors, he is the worst. Heβs Shadowβs new voice actor, by the way. Keep it on Japanese. You donβt want to hear that guy. He only talks at the end, but itβs still horrible hearing everyone speak in one cutscene when 95% are all terrible.

I will not buy any Sonic games where I cannot listen to their Japanese voices. These new voices are bad, and so far, the only fitting ones I've heard were Knuckles's, Vector's, and Omochao (

Eh, I don't really like Tails's new voice actor, and I'm glad they kept Mike. He portrays a wonderful Eggman. Dunno, wish they would've but it seems the masses are eating up this garbage.

I concur. Honestly, hearing that grating voice just makes my ears bleed. I hate how they changed Sonic's personality to match the voice. He used to be kinda laid back and yeah, he would never stay still, but now it just feels.. obnoxious. Like he's blowing everything off as not interesting enough for him. And he's just become a total jerk, in my opinion. It's only been two games, but this looks like the beginning of the end.

I thank he sounds way better than Jason. Man, im glad Jason's gone, and so happy that there is a better actor playing the role as Sonic. But I do like Ryan better and Jaleel was the best.

I think Jason was fine. It wasn't as major of a change as Roger's voice was. To me, it doesn't sound cartoony. It made me kinda mad when on the Sonic News Network, if they were going to give Classic Sonic a voice he would have done it. Ugh I'm so glad they didn't.
It's your opinion but I'm glad we agree about Ryan and Jaleel. They were both wonderful voice actors and it was wrong not to use them again, but

I'm not gunna flame, he does sound a little gruff, but I will say this - Sonic has been massively re-hashed in the west. His original creator always intended him to be an adult, but SEGA US decided he'd be more marketable as a teenager and changed his back story.
And sorry, but your stamp is quite hard to read. The font is a little too small and the italics make it really difficult to read because it's quite a dainty font.

I realize that a lot of things about Sonic were changed or lost in translation, but I do believe that Tails was originally meant to be a girl as well (and now I'm starting to think he's turning into one based on his voice) I think in the end the things that were changed in the US turned out for the best because we don't love him any less than in Japan and other Eastern countries.
I'm going to fix it.

Tails was an American idea - they decided he needed a social life to be an interesting character, but he was always a boy. Yeah, he was actually more popular in the west than in Asia when he was released. But before they made it blatant that he was only meant to be 16 - I'd always imagined him as being in his early to mid 20s.

I found the text kind of difficult to read due to the combination of the font size and the italics. You either need to take italics off or make it a larger font, or a both. I think it would also benefit from being centered. Aside from that, good job.

Lol, Sonic's new voice actor does Ezio from Assassin's Creed 2. And he has an Italian accent in that game. xD I have yet to hear him voice Sonic..but I'm pretty sure I'll keep on thinking of Sonic with an Italian accent..
Griffith was an awesome Sonic. Hell, he voiced Shadow and he completely changed his voice to not sound like Sonic. Bleh, voice acting. Ruins the good things in things. :c
