I will admit that while I respected Neon Genesis Evangelion, I never liked it because of this episode. Rei was the only character that I liked, and they kill her off... kinda. How that happened made me SO angry, and no, it wasn't because of the Angel.

More than a way to conclude Rei's character it looked like a way to get rid of her growth, and they did it again in the Rebuild continuity, and I think it was worse there, it looks as if the writer is actually mocking the character.

I only watched the original anime, so I wouldn't really know... But the Character Derailment on Rei III was for Akagi rather than Rei.
