Description
Faris is a woman in her early-30s. She grew up within the world-spanning holdings of the Victorian Empire, at the southern end of the continent of Vestria, with parents from the cursed Terra Nefasia, living more or less off the radar amongst the humans of Victoria.
She joined the crew of The Windfish, a few years before the original captain passed away and left it to Byron. In the years after the first captain passed away, and the crew managed to get mysteriously transported to another plane (which nobody on the crew can say, for sure, how it happened, to this day), she was an exemplary first mate. She continues to offer her counsel as Byron’s second in command.
Personality: Faris is a loyal member of the crew, and a deadly fighter. She is level-headed, and in conflict tends to act with her head over her heart. While she follows Byron’s orders, more or less, to a fault, she readily offers objection or advice if she thinks there is some aspect to an order that Byron is not seeing (you know…standard first-mate stuff).
Despite her generally calculative demeanor, she has a strong moral compass; it has only occasionally come into conflict with her captain’s orders, and in those events, she has never failed to convince him of a more moral (and ultimately successful) alternative.
As an aside, Faris is not vain (despite her self-confidence)—she doesn’t put a great deal of effort into her appearance, or particularly care what others think of her, physically. That said, a few years back, after a card game that turned south, she was jumped outside a tavern, resulting in the cheek scar that now mars her left cheek. In general, she is dismissive of any mention of it; sometimes, when asked, she even makes jokes about the confrontation (“You should see the other guy!”)…but, if pressed to hard about it (which has happened at least a couple of times over the years, usually by drunken men in similar taverns), she has been known to lose her cool, and put a cad in his place with violence. She’s never proud of it after the fact.
Duties: Helmsman, security, passenger background checks, other clerical work.
In Combat: Faris is well-seasoned in both melee and ranged combat, often wielding both a rapier and a revolver simultaneously. She is smart enough to generally favor picking off her opponents from a distance (preferably with cover), if at all possible, but when forced (either because there are no other options, or because her crew is in trouble), she will wade in with aggressive force, doing her best to keep moving about the battlefield in hopes of keeping her opponents off-guard.
