It truly is an amazing place. It's just hidden neatly away, but in reality is only about a 20 minute drive from the city centre.

Aww I want to go to Scotland! You're so lucky lol. The photo is really amazing and totally has a bit of creepiness to it, but has a lot of history to it.

The place has a huge history. Scotland is full of history and many old buildings are protected, so you can always find something old thats new to you. hehe

I'm extremely fascinated with folklore. For my English 1B class, one of the assignments was to write a play and I based mine on Scottish folklore. I got an A on it lol. I love places with history because you get to learn who lived there, what they did, any odd facts or anything that is interesting. I love that kind of stuff.

I agree, finding out what happened in places before is what makes history interesting.
That's the best thing about visiting old and abandoned places rather than museums (which i love). you get a sense of how peoples lives were, what places were like, rooms were used for. There's nothing clinical, nothing hidden and nothing forgotten. You see with your own eyes rather than hear what people tell you.
There's nothing like being immersed in the world around you.

I totally agree. I'm actually taking an archaeology class right now. Its not for my major or anything, Im taking it out of pure interest. Its a shame that there wont be any field trips anywhere cause some students sign up and then when the day comes for the trip, only like 5 show up out of 20. Sigh, I would have been one of those 5 that came too. I love an adventure and going to different places lol

That's rubbish that you can't go on any trips. It amazes me how little people take an interest in such rich culture.
Maybe you could spearhead a trip and organise it with your class, then they would know that there was an interest?

I didn't know Shutter Island was real
I kid. This is a very nice shot, though. Even though it's an asylum and all, I still find it quite peaceful.

Wow! I wish i could visit it one day!
By the way it's a pity -there is a security. Buy maybe because of it this place isn't damaged badly as there others without it.

I would recommend visiting, it's one of the most interesting places i've been - i'm lucky that it's so close to home.
There's a lot of security because it belongs to the NHS and so is government property. Someone broke in and stole patient records a while ago and sold them to the press so they can't afford to take chances.
Although some places are structurally unsound, so they can't just let people in if it's dangerous -but i've been in worse places.

Well, in the country where I live, all the important document are take away before leaving the place, and as the result there are no security, only if it's a plant or an industrial area. And one of the common security methods is the massive iron door with a code lock or bars on the windows. So the security of the visitors are in their own hands.
By the way, what is the NHS? National heritage society?

National Health Service.
All the records should have been taken away and kept secure when the left the building, that's why the guy that found the stuff went to the press with it - loads of personal information was at risk.
I guess they decided that security was easier than searching the place.
Here, if you enter a building without permission you are breaking and entering which is against the law. In England you can't even walk on privately owned property because of the trespass laws - luckily for me: there are no trespass laws in Scotland so i can go where i want as long as i don't get caught inside.

Such a beautiful asylum. If only the security wasn't so tight.
It would be wonderful to be able to visit that asylum. Its a shame what people do to the places though. When they hold so much beauty alot of people go to detroy it by stealing what ever is left behind.

I agree completely with you. It is awful to walk through a place that is vandalised or destroyed. I try very hard not to move or break anything.
I recently visited an abandoned bunker, it is amazing on the lower levels but the upper part has been vandalised, i wish people would leave these places as they were, there is beauty in what is pure and untouched.

It is so sad. I have only been to an abandont hospital. With mostly everything still there, the tools, beds, you name it, even personal items from the patient.
But I had gone again to visit it lately. And someone. Took two of the remaining beds, a suit case, room keys and some equipment.
If only people had the sense to leave things alone. That would be wonderful.

It's amazing that you got to go and find all that stuff, exactly how it was meant to me. (now because of some waster, no one will ever see it again).
There are a few beds left in the asylum and one wheelchair. That is all that's left that isn't bolted down. I think that's because of the security now. I know of someone who stole lots of files from the Asylum and sold them to the papers - i think that's why the security is so tight. Kinda ruined it for everyone else.

I wish I came sooner, so I could have caught the dim whit who stole it all. Everything was in such good shape, there was no grafitti...Now really the only place that has been kept pure and un touched is the mourge (sp?), the maternity ward, alot of the sergical wards, and some of the offices. Even the keys where left behind, every document.
Though I do wonder what the people do when they steal the chairs, beds, personal items.
Though I should post the pictures sometime if i ever find the cord to my camera.
I can see why the security is tight at the asylum. I hate it when people go and do stupid things like that. Personally I'm glad the documents and files are hidden pretty well..
