I'm really impressed with how you manage to combine cuteness with such complicated, grown-up issues. Yet so far, nothing is heavy-handed or overly light. So far you've kept things really balanced. 
I never would have guessed Wuffle would have such a complicated relationship with his family; at first glance it would seem like he comes from a broken family, but then after awhile it looks like there's more to it than that. Plus I didn't know Deb was an orphan? That's really sad. 
Oh yes, and btw, WOW, those are some BIG carrots!
