Nice head shot. You've got the shadowing just about right (following the contours of the cartoon head). There's something not-quite-doing-it-for-me about that line placement up the side of his neck... actually, I think it might be a little too dark and standing out.

I can see a Cheeks nose.

btw, do you think his shading is to dark, and blocky? like i know it meant to be blocky, thats the style, but does it look to dark to be real?

No no. It looks good overall. The blocky style of shading goes well with the overall cartoon style.

lol caught me!
yer i do losely base my characters of cheeks style
i hope as a character designer that isnt a bad thing?
(manga steal noses all the time lol)
the line placement, i think that near the ear, if thats what your talking about, then yes i think i didnt curve it in enough, the darker line im having trouble seeing tho atm
is this picture still to flat? do u think
(i will still try making the outline a bit thicker)

Also, you're shadowing has helped keep it from being flat.

i think thats what mine needs than
the shadowing stops it from beeign too flat
(he has some pictures where he doesnt shadow and they still dont look flat, lol i dont know how he does it)
cartoon shading you can be prety out, and it wont matter, but you still gota folow a basic shading guidline or the picture wont make sence

He's been doing this stuff for years continuously so don't get too down on yourself. He's also probably got a traditional fine arts background/experince as well. I look around and see all these guys and girls on here who absolutely kick my ass when it comes to skills but I have to remember that I'm still learning myself and my art is different again to other people.

im using the pen tool btw
is it realy noticable? (jsut when i look at cartoons they look like there done with the pen tool and thats what all my teachers at this game design coarse have told me to) im prety new at it, but is it noticible or am i using it ok?

lowman-x In reply to Tennasity [2009-11-17 04:24:28 +0000 UTC]

The pen tool is fine, especially if you're after those fine smooth cartoony lines. I think just beef the thickness up a tiny amount.

Tennasity In reply to lowman-x [2009-11-17 05:52:40 +0000 UTC]

oright then cool
do you think im using the pen tool ok tho?
be honest lol
its a tricky tool to use sometimes

and yes im going to try, by beef up the lines, do you mean just the OUTLINE?

lowman-x In reply to Tennasity [2009-11-17 22:58:33 +0000 UTC]

Not just the outline (though start there and see how it looks) but also the major lines of your images.

Thanks for the praise, man.

I work at a TAFE in North Melbourne teaching Certificate II Multimedia and I'm a high school Visual Arts teacher by training. Though I'm heading back to school next year to do 3D animation and games design and at the end of 2011 I'm looking to getting out of teaching altogether.

Being a teacher is pretty good. It can get a bit difficult especially when you have students who have talent but waste it by screwing around all the time. It's also hard sometimes to get time to do your own stuff because you're so buggered at the end of the day that the last thing you want to do is draw.

My goal is to be doing games design (environment and character creation, rendering, animating etc) in one of the studios down here by the end of 2011 or the beginning of 2012.

Taking inspiration from other artists is cool. Just don't copy outright.

The line I'm talking about is the one that runs from just below his ear down towards the bottom of his neck (where it goes pointy at the bottom). It's standing out a little too much (I think). Mind you, I'm just being picky I think.

Tennasity In reply to lowman-x [2009-11-17 02:26:49 +0000 UTC]

thats cool
yer i can see that the shade line is a bit too dark comapared to the light line
maybe if i just tweak that a little and not make it so dark
i try to make my style look like my style a little bit
you dont think im copy cheeks entirely am i?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lowman-x In reply to Tennasity [2009-11-17 02:38:54 +0000 UTC]

No no. You've definitely got some influence from him but you'll find your own style will grow in its own way with more practice and time. So don't freak out too much.

ok good
phew*
just i saw cheeks get realy up this guy for copying his poses on his blog
it went for like a couple of weeks
i wouldnt want cheeks ever saying im copying him

lowman-x In reply to Tennasity [2009-11-17 04:26:27 +0000 UTC]

I think he was just a bit annoyed at that guy because it was obvious that he was copying complete pictures and not crediting Cheeks for the ideas. Emulating another person's style (especially when you're just starting out) is okay because, as you grow as an artist, you'll find that your own style will develop it's own look and it won't matter in the long run.

true, yer i try to make my style difrent a little
i dont want people thinking my art is just a bad version of cheeks, that wouldnt be cool at all lol
but im sure itl grow, like you said

That's pretty cool. I wouldn't wanna run into him in a dark alley lol.

To be honest, he really looks like something from a 1990s cartoon, which is actually pretty cool. He doesn't look to flat to me.
Nice job.
