    The words had only left Akira’s mouth when there was a sudden shift of movement in the small herd of loners. Those at the front seemed to begin to gather around their leader and it only took moments for the pale buckskin mare to understand what was going on. “Aaannd her cart’s stuck. Guess I jinxed it there, didn’t I?” she remarked, more to herself than anyone else. For once, she was somewhat grateful for all the stallions in the group. It may have slowed the tiny herd down but they should be able to get moving again soon enough.
  Her attention was so focused on the predicament ahead, Akira nearly jumped out of her skin at the sudden figure that seemed to have appeared next to her out of nowhere. Akira’s tall figure shadowed the much smaller palomino mare now beside her, making her feel much like giant, as the other mare she’d been conversing with was more petite than her as well. “Hi! Exciting trip isn’t it? Who would have thought there would be a fourth island? My name is Tierra and what are yours?” For a while, Akira simply stared back at the stranger as she quickly piped up and introduced herself as Tierra, inquiring Akira’s name in return. After several speechless moments, she managed to utter a soft, “Akira”, in response, though it was more like a question than an answer as her brain finally registered exactly what was happening. Not many other equines, especially strangers, approached or acknowledged her. She simply wasn’t used to the sudden attention.
  However, before Akira had the time to fully recover from her shock, her slim, mud-covered legs came to an immediate halt, her nostrils flaring slightly as she caught scent of the wind drifting around the bend ahead. Every delicate nerve, every muscle in the mare’s body tensed, and her eyes widened with that familiar sense of fear. Before Illucid, the appaloosa tasked with alerting the group to the newfound danger, could even reach the back of the pack, Akira knew what lie ahead. Bachelors. Akira had certainly spent enough time and energy concerned with that herd to know the scent they carried. A scent she came to recognize at a very early age as the scent of bondage and tyrannical rule. "Sorry to interrupt, but Ba’Yagu is requesting a meeting. There are Bach-” Illu hardly had a chance to relay his information to the stragglers of the group before Akira tersely cut him off, “Illu, how close are they?” she demanded softly, her ears focused solely in the face of the wind where the scent was coming from. Surprisingly, she had remembered the buckskin’s name this time, a rarity considering she rarely made ties with anyone, let alone a wild, silly young stallion who she’d only just met not that long ago.
  The next thing Akira saw answered her question for her. Her deep brown eyes caught a glimpse of a small party of bachelor stallions up ahead, partially hidden by the marsh’s tall weeds and foliage, and her brow instantly furrowed into an anxious expression upon her gentle face. She’d been around the herd a million times, yet she had always planned those meetings. This was unexpected...and she wasn’t ready. Her heart beat steadily against her chest, but she took a deep breath and looked at the group around her. It’s alright. We are a herd. Granted a tiny, temporary one, but a herd nonetheless. If we stick together, they shouldn’t mess with us. Hopefully we can get by without them seeing in the first place… her mind raced with these thoughts, the icy tendrils of fear that had started to grip her heart beginning to melt.
Realizing she’d lost herself in a daze, Akira cleared her throat and turned to the two mares beside her. “Just move as quietly as you can. We have the advantage being downwind so they have less of a chance of catching our scent. We might be able to make it past them without detection if everyone stays quiet and calm,” she explained quietly, years of experience strengthening her words. She’d done this a million times. She could do it again. Maybe she would actually be of some use to this makeshift herd.
