Merlin AU in which Dragons can take human form, and Merlin is a newborn dragon found by Will as an egg in the forests outside Ealdor. Will takes the black egg home to his mother Hunith, and they are shocked when it hatches into a little black dragon: they're even more shocked when the dragon then takes human form.
Merlin is the name Hunith and Will gave him, but his intended name, his dragon name, is Emrys. (Dragon's are born with their names, but Merlin was raised by humans and therefore never found his out).

Fast forward to Camelot, and Merlin has gained a large Dragon Family (Dragon's Brothers/Ladies are the humans or animals he has bonded with). Until one day Merlin and Leon are kidnapped by bandits. While trying to escape, Merlin accidentally (or was it destined?) bonds with Leon in a completely new way to the Dragon's Brother/Lady. A Dragon's Kin.
Eventually they escape and are found in the forest. Merlin asks Kilgharragh about the strange feelings he has with Leon, and Kilgharragh is surprised (having expected Merlin to chose Arthur as his Dragon's Kin).
At some point they all find out that Merlin's a dragon, and they're all Dragon's Brothers (in Gwen's case, a Dragon's Lady).

A Dragon's Kin has a telepathic bond with their dragon, and are able to access any instinctive knowledge their dragon has: for example, Leon finds he is able to read an ancient magical language without any teaching.
Under extremely special circumstances, a Dragon's Kin can turn into a dragon themselves: these are called Kin Born dragons and only last for a short time (after which the Kin Born must decide whether they want to remain as a dragon, or return to being human).
As a Kin Born, Leon looks different to full dragons: his markings and eyes make distinguish him from full dragons. While full dragons like Merlin, Kilgarragh and Aithusa have golden eyes, Leon keeps his human blue eyes. Also, as a incomplete Kin Born, Leon does not yet have wings. (A complete Kin Born is when a Kin Born chooses to stay as a dragon rather than turn back into a human)
