This is a little bit worse than normal HDR, but it's great when you don't have a tripod. And playing with effects and histogram may allow you to achieve some interesting stuff.

Make three copies of an original image, play with histogram and maybe add some special effects to get something like a normal photo, darkened and lightened one, you know. Then merge them in HDR as simple photos.
