Description

Known as The Fighting "I", the United States Ship Intrepid, CV-11, is one of 24 Essex-class carriers to serve in, and survive the end of World War II in the U.S. Navy.  She is the fourth US Navy ship to bear the name. Commissioned in August 1943, she participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater, and the Battle of Layte Gulf.

Her namesake comes from her 1904 counterpart.

After the war had ended, Intrepid underwent many changes and was later remodernized in the 50s as an attack carrier (CVA), and then eventually became an antisubmarine carrier (CVS). In her second career, she served mainly in the Atlantic, but she also participated in the war of Vietnam.

After being decomissioned for the second time in 1974, and rather than being sold for demolition, she was pereserved as a museum in New York City as part of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in 1982.

And she still lives to this very day, despite her modern-day looks.

Learn about the history of her amazing career here, and see how she fought in World War II and Vietnam, and how she became a modern aircraft carrier to carry and launch modern U.S. fighter jet planes:
