Leaping into the dark portal on top of the Tower , Freeman is teleported to a secret chamber where the Nihilanth dwells!

A creature of unknown origins and enormous power, the Nihilanth is responsible for the dimensional boundaries between the Earth and Xen being torn and maintained open.

Very few hints about the creature's background are given out: his massive head has been the object of surgery, displaying big scars; he uses a levitational device whose technology appears not of xenian nature; despite his almighty demeanour, he bears shackles in his wrists, like the vortigaunts do; as most of his subjects, he has a third vestigial arm. Engaging in telepatic conversation with Gordon, he mentions he is the 'last one', probably last one of his kind, and despises the humans intrusion in his world, likening them to thieves.

The Nihilanth is set on destroying Gordon and invading the Earth. His telechinectic powers allow him to throw heavy chunks of rock at Freeman, altering the cave's floor to block Gordon's attacks and even summon object through teleportation and drop them in the opponent's direction. As a defense, the Nihilanth possesses a multilayered force field generated by autonomous engines and can bring about three health regenerating crystals.

If the dynamics of his defenses are not understood and broken, the fight against the Nihilanth can last forever and with no quarter!
