As for fixing it, most people give some leeway with poetry for artistic license. Poetry does not work very well if you do not.

I don't think this is about leeway as much as making a false claim. The way I see it, Robert have come to an conclusion from his experience, that God does not exist, as if the said experience has proved this, whereas in reality, he have merely failed to find God and prove anything at all.

Everyone is free to make there own choice. Unfortunately I don't believe that belief normally is a choice. Very often its trained into you.

Tricky question actually, he never really declared his views although you can find an interesting (although not guaranteed to be accurate) breakdown here [link] Personally I think he was an atheist at least through most of life.
