I don’t care what the writers say. Aang was a great dad— it’s not in his personality to be neglectful. Even if he got carried away by his duties, or showed more attention to Tenzin later on, then Katara would have put him in his place. It’s not in her nature to LET him be a neglectful dad—especially since Katara knows personally how painful it is to have a father be constantly gone due to his “duties.”
They may have had their ups and downs, like any other family, but they were happy and supportive and together.

Awww, this is adorable!
But really, when they put Aang as a neglectful dad, it made me want to bang my head off a wall. I find it hard to believe he'd neglect his family, if anything he'd be a great (protective) dad.

neglectful is a harsh word, I think he is just worried about the airbender heritage and culture that's why he focuses a bit more on his only airbender kid. I think he just overlooked his kid's feelings.

...you know, that doesn't really sound like Aang either. If Bumi and Kya were anything like Aang and Katara (or even Sokka), then they'd be very expressive of themselves. Guilty about not being Airbenders I can understand; but seriously, leaving his other kids behind to go on fun trips? NOT like Aang. At all. The ONE TIME he went on a "field trip" that didn't include his whole family, it was with a rookie member of the group to try and do something practical, and it was ONCE. Forget what Bryke said, this is how an Air Nomad acts.

Why would you want to ignore that a person who has been raised from birth to be aloof and detached in order to achieve enlightenment would make a bad dad.
A person can’t control another person. You can enact momentary change but not permanent.
They have his character correct being raised by monks, shifted about and not really allowed to form relationships on a familial basis.
Tenzin got a lot of his attention simply because he was his hope for the future to restore the air benders.
Notably, I would think that his relationship with Katara would have definitely cooled and she would have tried to compensate for the him with Kya and Bumi as many mothers do with dads who have favorite sons.
She would make excuses for him, trying to be both father and mother instead of just speaking the truth.
Note the other kids confusion and lack of self-esteem.
Also the other two have no families of their own!

And I totally absolutely agree with you on Aang as a dad. That's exactly what's been running through my head ever since they brought it up. Just no way Aang would be a terrible father. The Katara point absolutely, and plus for someone who's lost as much as Aang had, family would have been everything to him.

And yes, that's one thing I didn't mention because I thought it was so obvious-- for Aang, who had lost his whole culture and his whole people, family would be the most important to him, no matter how much he "changed" as he grew older. His "neglect" doesn't match with his grief-- and we're talking about the guy who chose family (Katara) over the Avatar State in the middle of a war
That episode and the whole situation... could have been executed a whole lot better lol

Exactly. *nods* Yes, people change as they get older but this supposed behavior is entirely contrary to the fundamental nature of his character. If he can make it through the death of his people and a war and still have the same caring heart that he always had, then I don't see how he could change so drastically later. I expected and was kind of looking forward to the sibling jealousy plot after the first episode, but they just took it to a whole other level that was unnecessary.
So yeah, totally could have been done better, haha.

for those who have seen the trailers, I think I know how Bumi has airbending...there is something with the earth kingdom/dai lee, and that he may not biologically be aang's son-adopted son.

Personally I think most of the bullying Tenzin got from his siblings was prompted by the attention he got from the public, not from Aang. Aang may have spent a lot of time with Tenzin and made mistakes with each of his kids, but he wouldn't have been responsible for that level of rivalry between his kids. The Air Acolytes and the media of Republic City, on the other hand, undoubtedly showered all their affection on Tenzin, scarcely paying attention to Kya, and probably outright bullying Bumi. I imagine the public was just brutal to him. Which is why he became an attention seeker. He can't bend, so the only way to make his presence known is to be loud. Very loud. And probably destructive on occasion, whether intentionally or not.

And I agree-- in fact, LOK just seems so rushed to me, that I think the writers just tripped up. I mean, ATLA was so well thought out and planned, with everything falling into place and having a reason, and I just don't see much of this in LOK-- probably because they didn't plan to have a sequel after ATLA, and that's the reason why it seems so jarring compared. There are some genius plot devices there, but yeah. I hope season 3 will let them fix up some things!
