Description YES! SoniaCarreras , now in technicolor!

Oh, yes, for the fifth episode of The Good Ol' Days series, I am returning to a lighter theme and who better than the talented SoniaCarreras to depict a light situation?
This is staged in the tower days, after Anders' infamous escape swimming through lake Calenhad, and features Eloise's return. You will get more of her, in the future
This gave me also the occasion to express a theory about how the chantry (and the templars) deal with sexuality. According to various fonts, in Thedas homo/bisexuality is not strangely seen, though discouraged in the noble families as they must produce descendents (I thought Gaider also stated that somewhere), and according to what Wynne said, and according to the Comic written by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston, mages are highly discouraged to "entertain" themselves together because they will most likely produce magic descendents and thereso they belong to the chantry... thereso, why shouldn't they encourage same sex relatioships then? If it's not seen as something "sinful", it would be a perfect method of birth control, isn't it?

BTW: according to her, I managed to make Sonia draw her longest comic so far, in fact this is her firt multi-page comic!

Well, the problem of medieval-inspired world and homosexuality is that you have to choose what the lore religion says about it. In middle age Europe homosexuality was punished by death (by fire, sometimes) but that's because the church said it was a sin and an abomination, and even in the roman empire was frowned upon if passive (because roman empire had a cult of "virility", and "being the woman" in a relationship was degrading and almost blasphemous, that's why it was mostly practiced with slaves). But it seems in Dragon Age that the chantry has nothing against it, so I think culturally it would be a non-issue...

If only the Church in our world had that mentally as the Chantry does.

In ancient times they used honey as anti-conceptional, a sweet solution.

And actually the dead talk sometimes... they also walk, fight, become main caracther when possessed by a spirit and can teach you how to become an arcane warrior.

If he told Jowan at the time they could have became farmers instead of saving the world.

Awesome! I wondered about the same-sex relationships, but maybe the Chantry just doesn't want to encourage people to have relationships, out of fairness. They just might ignore a same-sex relationship more than a hetero relationship.

So... I've spent the last ten minutes looking up and down to this strip and wondering how something I've drawn can look so well Awesome work!!! Love the coloring and the suggestion of a background, and definitely your script worked wonderfully here. (So you like the last panel? I thought Eloise casting a ball of fire would be a nice touch to her comment )

You know, I'm open to more collaborations... this has been terribly fun!! (Specially having another person doing what I hate most: coloring and editing )

Abadir In reply to SoniaCarreras [2011-03-28 22:30:24 +0000 UTC]

I just try to give your drawing justice. As I said before, I like your style but honestly I thought that the colorl wouldn't have fit very well, so I started messing up a bit and... well, you were there during the first page, you saw what I did...
My fear was that coloring - and mostly shading - I would have changed too much your part of the draw (like in the shadows on the noses) "adding" too much on the lineart, so I tried to stay true to your lines and the way you draw the elements... it was challenging but fun...
And yes, the fireball of Eloise was what this strip needed to be "finished" and her line to be "final", gives a "guess what happens next" to the reader, I think...

Coloring and editing, you say? Funny, is te part I like the most...

SoniaCarreras In reply to Abadir [2011-03-29 07:28:45 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, that means we can make a good team!!!

I think your coloring was great, it gave the strip quite a cartoon style. Anyway, if you had concerns about shading, if you saw the strips I've shaded in b/w, specially about the noses and all that, the effect was similar. I think you caught it quite well . White in their eyes still shocks me, though

I wanted to show Eloise making a true threat, not just a joke . Glad you liked it. Anyway I drew everything as I saw it in my head (well, making Ewan lean back in the ground was a resource to change the camera so the panels weren't boring , but I like how it came out)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Abadir In reply to SoniaCarreras [2011-03-29 09:45:36 +0000 UTC]

I had that in mind when making the shades, thought I used a different coloring tecnique

And yes, it was quite Eloise, and I think you depicted the true nature of their relatioship, as they were friend but also rivals, in a competition to win the First Enchanter's favour. They used to hang out wery well as they were similar in many ways, but they also used to start little fights and makes silly praks to each other, kind of a "rivalry-friendship" if they were in DA2, but in a school context.

And the change of position is good, I use the same trick when I write endless dialogues and pages with 10/11 panels in (sometimes I cut them out merging dialogues in a single panel ) but mostly I use close ups and the infamous "close up on eyes when somen's saying something really important or badass"...

Thank you
I wanted to try something different with this, because I think color as I usually do it doesn't fit well Sonia's style, but I didn't want to do something "totally" different from what I usually do, because I think this deserved full color
As for the dialogues, I wasn't sure about it until I have seen Sonia's work, because it has all that I wanted into but "written" didn't worked much, it seemed rushed and unfinished (though is the script that tooke me the longest in this series ), but Sonia's last panel looks so "conclusive", "final" and the dialogue goes...

Congrats to you two, this comic was epic.
One nitpick though: It seems to me, that the dialogue in panel should have the "actors" reversed. It should be her who's saying the stuff about the chantry.... to and him who's going "WHAT" at the idea of it being for their sak.

Ahahaha, that's not a bad idea. I guess they don't encourage it "canonly", but I bet there are *some* people in the chantry who think like that, even if it might seem in a derogatory fashion ("Let's make those mages have to do it this way, I don't want any tiny ugly mage children blowing everything up!!").

It's also nice to see how our young mages are looking into their budding sexuality. ...I kind of wish I had a budding sexuality D=

Charlett In reply to Abadir [2011-03-28 23:45:30 +0000 UTC]

This is true! I bet if stuff like that does happen though they just do what they did with Wynne, and ship the baby off to another circle. Probably it's what they think is best D=

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Abadir In reply to Charlett [2011-03-29 00:12:11 +0000 UTC]

Actually according to the lore I collected they are "belong to the chantry". Now, I don't know if they wait for them to show magical signs and then sent into the circles or they train them as templars teaching them templar magic... after all templars DO use magic... who knows... this is unclear, the only two character I know born into the circle are Wynne's son (which is unkown his fate) and Gleam from the comic, which is tecnically an apostate because her mother fled before she was born and she was adopted by a smith on the Frostback mountains...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Charlett In reply to Abadir [2011-03-29 01:08:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I don't know what that means either, but I do assume that they are taken somewhere like a chantry in another locale (and make some cockamamie story like their parents died or something), and if the baby gets mage powers, they ship them off to the circle in another country. Sounds logical at least.
