Time. We all take the concept for granted and merely break it down into hours of a day, days of a week, weeks of a month and so on. But do you know, or ever stopped to think, what time really means? Don't worry, its alright if you didn't. Most of us don't. So allow me to tell you a little story and we'll see if your perspective on this little thing we call time changes or not.
Long ago in the Edo period of Japan, there lived three spirits. The first spirit was a nine-tailed Kyuubi who often took on the forum of a human samurai known as Jakkukistune, or Jack for short. He rules over the Temporal Plane of the Honored, and believed that all humans had a just and righteous heart. However his fellow spirit was a different case. This second spirit was a demonic Ryu that would usually take the form of a phantom known as Aku. He rules over the Temporal Plane of the Dishonored, and believed that all humans were selfish and cruel. And he third spirit who brought balance between them was known as The Goddess of Water, a woman who governed every drop of liquid on the planet and was bluer than the very sea that she controlled. With all three together there was balance in the world.
Every year during the Obon Festival, in which generations honor the lives of their ancestors, Jack and Aku would watch the mortal participate and escort the souls of the dead to the land of the living in order to watch them interact with the new generations that honor their memory. Now the interesting thing about Jack and Aku is that they are more than spirits who tend to the dead. They're actually married and are a happy, albeit frequently bickering, couple. On this night of the Obon Festival Jack and Aku talk among themselves, with the Kyuubi in disguise keeping his Ryu husband in line along the way, until Aku brings up a challenge. A wager, to be exact. And a bit of searching leads them to the center of their wager. Three young boys. One is named Rook Blonko who, despite coming from a long line of samurai, is happiest when he is playing his guitar. The second boy is named Kevin Levin, a little hotshot who aspires to be a great town hero just like his honored late father who died when going up against a notorious criminal. And the third boy is named Ben Tennyson, loyal and sweet as they come as well as being the son of the town mayor.
These three boys are very close friends, but Rook and Kevin both have a crush on Ben. This leads us to the wager. Jack bets that Ben will marry Rook when they get older. However Aku puts his money on Kevin, and if he wins then Jack will trade lands with him which would allow Aku rule of the Temporal Plane of the Honored. And if Jack wins then Aku will stop meddling with the affairs of mortals.
And thus, by the ancient rules, the wager is set. Who will win? Only time can tell. This is the story of The Book of Time...
