Description The tower at Sissinghurst, what remains of a grand Elizabethan manor house. Vita Sackville-West claimed one of the rooms in the tower as her study, giving a sublime view of the gardens and the Kentish Weald.

you know I've always wanted to live in a place like that...but growing up in Canada has made it a bucket list kind of thing...sigh.

It would be lovely to live in a monument like this, it's certainly unique! I'd just think of the downsides like the lack of plumbing if I were you...

Its like a folly now, isn't it?

That's a good question! However, I believe that it isn't a folly simply because it wasn't designed to be one; folly's are by definition whimsical buildings deliberately built into a landscape for aesthetic purposes, whereas buildings like this one is technically a ruin. Although abandoned for many years before being bought by the Sackville-Wests, the tower was apparently in remarkably sound condition despite some of the windows having been damaged, allowing birds and pigeons to make a home out of it. The stables and the granary which were also part of the original manor house have also survived, as has the Priest's House and South Cottage. Traces of the manor house walls survive as part of the walled gardens at Sissinghurst. [link]

I understand, I just thought that now it effectively is a folly. To paraphrase Mitch Hedberg's observation about escalators: old manor houses can never fall into ruins. They can only become follies

Or...something like that
