Very interesting. I was looking at some of your artwork and thinking; 'i wonder what their jaw structure is like. Wait, do they even have a jaw structure?'
Can't wait to see the sculpture.

Did you ever do a sculpture of the birrin?

I did! I use it as a drawing reference, though the design is a bit out of date now.

These were old tests to see if I could re-design the birrin head. Might use them in the future for different creatures.

I don't know what this is supposed to be, but the one on the far left looks most like it could be a natural organism. The one on the bottom is next - but only if it were very small.

On the bottom right one, I notice a mark midway down the neck. What is that, if you don't mind my asking?

Your work is such an inspiration and so refreshing. However, the latest birrin head concept that you had established was so fitting and in my opinion flowed well with the rest of the body. i honestly couldnt see any of these heads on that body design. I'm in agreement with everybody else here, make these designs characteristics of different races. Keep up the awesome work and good luck with your hand.

If I were you, I'd steer away, far far away, from those big pincer mandibles on the lower right concept. They don't fit the look that you've established for this species and world, in my opinion, and they are also very cliched features--jaws like this are practically the first thing that come to mind when thinking of insect mouthparts. I like the interior set of more beak-like jaws very much, though. They have a very interesting shape to them. I could see this head, minus the big mandibles, as a race or ethnicity of the Birrin, or perhaps a closely related species (the Birrin equivalent of a hominid, perhaps). I'd like to see you keep the earlier variant with the more conical head, though, rather than completely replace it with a radically changed design.
I'm sorry that your hand was injured. I've missed your updates on this project, and I look forward to seeing it updated regularly again.

I am probably going to use the original mouth design. However I felt a need to experiment due to the Star Trek creature, which is similar in many ways to the Birrin, sadly.

A bit swan-like... It's awesome to see you browsing the pool of concepts around this creature.
These 'faces' (eyes, mouth) (especially the upper two) would look awesome with those meaty eyestalks (or earstalks, or feedstalks/mouthstalks, because I see you're switching them around a bit, apparently?)... They could wrap around the face in the way those jaws do, without covering the existing eyes...

These concepts were made due to fears over the similarities between the Birrin and the monster on Star Trek. However, on review that creature may be distinct enough that I don't have to redesign.

I quite agree, the changes made look like they could work as racial variations. I can see how the mandibled one would work well as a tribal society, given that lifestyle would require more 'brutish' physiology.

Why these heads are so different? I hope they are various species, because if you are planning to make Birrin's something like intelligent "ant nest", it would be

Abiogenisis In reply to Preradkor [2009-05-20 22:13:37 +0000 UTC]
I used tiger beetles as references, which accounts for the insect like appearance of one of the heads.
They do not behave like ants.

So they are somethink like "predatory mammals" from the same planet as Birrins or Birrins modifications?
π: 0 β©: 1
Abiogenisis In reply to Preradkor [2009-05-21 12:25:13 +0000 UTC]
There are all possible heads of the Birrin species itself. I wanted to redesign because an alien creature in the new Star Trek movie had a creature similar in some ways to the Birrin. However I don't think I will bother changing much.
