Hey look! I've finally finished Pash's reference sheet. I think I started on this back in ...June. Whoa. That is way too long. I didn't actually work on it the whole time if anyone's thinking that. I kinda dropped it for a whole month and yeah...
I didn't shade it because the majority response to my journal here was to leave it unshaded. Plus, I'm already insanely disinterested in this reference sheet, so I figure it's better to leave it unshaded and finish it now rather than shade it and finish it in October. heh.
Pash's back story is intentionally vague here. Most of the people who draw Pash draw her for an exchange, so I figure that they don't really need to know her whole back story for one picture. Plus, writing is hard for me so it'd take a lot of extra effort to make my back-story text-walls understandable. P:
Things I've learned from this:
-study your subject BEFORE you start drawing it. I can't tell you how many times I redrew ALL of the wings. Yes, ALL of them. Practice/know wings/feather placement before you draw a winged character, 4srs.
-Don't use the special oil brush for lineart. It does not make pretty lineart and it's a pain to clean up. Use the hard round brush or something. Actually, I'd like to know what that "something" is too 'cause the smaller hard round brushes (like 7 and below) comes out really anti-aliased/blurry in photoshop. :/

I named her Pastiche because she is a combination of several different species and I took inspiration from several different artists when I came up with her design.

Urban dictionary lists a bunch of different definitions for it and almost all of them say that it means kissing. I found out a while back that it's a slang word down in Australia/New Zealand but that doesn't bother me since no-one uses it here. XD

This is a lovely reference you've got here. It's so great to see you do a ref sheet. I've honestly never seen one from you before, and I think you're very skilled at them!
I'm liking the visuals of this sheet. Your choice of background texture and color is nice, though it's a little bit hard to see her beak on the main picture. All the little boxes are lined up properly as well, which I like because that makes it organized and helpful. My references are crammed so full of biography and text that it's hard to make it visually appealing. Ffffff.
Pash herself, absolutely lovely character. I agree all the way with ~Foxchibi about the colors: the blues and subtle purples compliment those orange and red tones perfectly. Her colors alone make her a beauty, they really do. And I love the fact that she's part owl. I don't watch any gryphon artists so I've never seen that before, and it's simply adorable. Great work on this ref, it was very fun to read. <3
Would you mind further explaining her psychic powers? I don't know much about that kind of stuff, so I'm curious about what Pash can do. Like...telekinesis or something to that extent?

Well, I guess it worked back when they had to -look- at the picture to fave it. Now people can just fave stuff from their inboxes so they never see the description at all. These kids and their conveniences. *shakes cane*
It's been a long time since I've made a reference sheet. The last time I made a full reference sheet was back in... '05 I think? Oh boy. X.x
Is her beak hard to see because of the dark background, or is it because of the lines? The lines themselves were more visible in the .psd, but they're harder to see in the .jpg version. I'm not sure why that happened. Thanks for pointing it out, though. C:
I haven't seen a lot of people with owl characters, so I guess Pash is a rarity like that. The most common owl gryphon characters I've seen have been snowy owls crossed with snow leopards. I think it's a pretty combination myself, so I can see why they make it. C:

Haha you're very welcome though. During that for that long period of time between references you definitely picked up some skills, so you've got my commendations for that!
As for her beak, I think it's because of the lines. The brown lineart is about as dark as the background, so this is probably why. It's not bad though. ;D
Ah but yes, that would be pretty cool. I'd appreciate it! Do you think that you can copy/paste it to a note for me and send it through that way? I have bad dial-up, and LJ loads hellishly slow for me...

I'm glad you stuck with this design. I enjoy how pleasing it is to the eye, and that nothing is too bright or overbearing. Personally I like the contrast between warm and cool colors, as well as the leg striping. I never knew she was a psychic and that she lived in a dream world! So cool!

Haha, yeah. I thought I had mentioned her back-story before, but I must have forgotten to do it. That happens a lot with my characters. XD
I'm still not 100% happy with this new design, but it's much, much better than her old design. Good to hear that you like it! I had planned on getting rid of the leg stripes, but I'm really happy that I didn't.
