So for the past three weeks solid I've been playing Fall of an Empire by The L-Train and the Royal Canterlot Symphonic Metal Orchestra. has awesome symphonic metal instrumentation as usual, created the story and brought it to life with evocative lyrics, and they got some really great performances out of the cast.
But what hooked me even before the release was a teaser of the choir that would punctuate the tracks. I was sold before I even bought it, but it was the right decision! The full album on Bandcamp includes an absolutely kick-ass instrumental/choral version as a bonus disc, and that's what I've been listening to for weeks on end. Even my last few submissions here were finished up with this playing in the background. Best $8 AUS I ever spent!

This depicts King Sombra at the end of track 7 . I've been wanting to create some art based on this album for weeks now. My first concept didn't really pan out, but my second sketch seemed to be working.

For the inks, I tried a few things that are pretty foreign to my toolkit. My first attempt at establishing tone was to use the point of a pen. That didn't really give the results I wanted, so I resorted to going over some parts with dry brush. The hatching, as always with me, is quite sloppy despite my best efforts. I can't hatch lines to save my life, or a picture. Overall, not really satisfied with the attempts as texture or tone on this one.

For the fills, I "in"-lined the shapes with a black brush pen and then painted them in with q-tips dipped in ink. It was easier and less hassle than using a brush.
The secret is to apply quick, long, light strokes. Put down a thin first coat so that the moisture in the ink doesn't cause the paper to warp. Then go back over it with successive strokes that can be shorter and more heavily applied. The layer of dried ink will help keep the paper in decent shape, and it'll also grab the wet ink into the places and spots that your first coat didn't cover very well.
