Description
a fly in a puddle
on its back
its wings trapped by the ocean world below
its legs crawling, moving, sneaking
trying to call to the world above
to reclaim it
for it is nowhere
it is not in the water, claimed by the water
drowning in the water and finished
nor is it in the air
where it belongs
with its wings beating,
free of their restraints
constricting and restricting what it ought to do
wants to do
should do
but the air cannot claim it
nor can the water
for it is in the middle
nowhere
so it waves it limbs
crying with motions
expending its energy in a desperate struggle against inevitability
a futility
that it does not yet know it cannot win
nor will it
till it has won
more finished
because it will be free of the nowhere
the ocean below and the air above that rejected so
and instead be above
and beyond the nowhere we know as here
in the freedom it could find before
it got caught in nowhere
and died
