I was just dipping my feet into the world of Anime when I first learned of Giant Robo. Between this and Cowboy Bebop, I almost had no more use for the genre.

I think there are some more gems to be found, I am especially fond of Miyazaki's films and some by Studio Gainax, and also the Ghost In The Shell series... Giant Robo remains at the top, Cowboy Bebop would be somewhere inbetween.

Thanks! I haven't gotten around to seeing it, but I'll make sure to take a look, although I guess the greatness of the GR OVA can be traced back to the greatness of Imagawa and his staff. So in the end I'd rather follow Imagawa's work.

Yeah, ditto...but the artwork and re-imagining of the Daisaku/Robo onnection is pretty cool. No Big Fire or Daisaku's dad creating Giant Robo, but the robo with the cresent moon on his head is in there and the artwork is ridiculously great.

I don't know the original GR series, so I wouldn't know about the "original" connection between Daisaku & GR, but I'm fairly sure Big Fire was added by Imagawa. It was kind of funny to watch his remake of Tetsujin28 afterwards, featuring "Doctor Big Fire"

By original I mean the Imagawa version...do you mean the Tetsujin 28 series from the 80's?

Again, I haven't seen the 80s version, but the recent Imagawa version. It's nice to see the richness of Mitsuteru Yokoyama's world, and Imagawa's view of it, but I think he's trying a bit hard there to be overly faithful to the original... whereas on GR, he's positively over-the-top.
