Description My part of an art trade with

*TantzAerine writes and draws a webcomic called "Without Moonlight", which is about the Greek resistance during WWII. This piece depicts two of the main characters, Fotis (on the left) and Basil (on the right). TantzAerine wrote: "They are both leaders, but completely different since one is a veteran soldier, the other just barely having entered his teen years (he's 14). They also have a very 'back to back' style of complementing their leadership over the small team they got running. " So, this picture shows them plotting over a map of Athens. Possibly an escape route, or the best way for stealing stuff from the Nazis, or both! I have to admit I have no idea whether Basil actually smokes... it's just for the drama, and my attempt to capture something like an old spy movie vibe.

Tantz, I hope you like it! I gave it my best ^_^ I certainly draw kids quite different than you do, but I felt pretty comfortable drawing Basil.

And everyone, please check out Without Moonlight! [link] *TantzAerine is an excellent writer and sequential storyteller, and the amount of authentic detail she puts into her panels is mind-boggling!

I thought I already commented on this! Darn iPod.

It's stunning, looks like a scene from an animated film.

I might trust Miyazaki with it. He would insist on some dogfights, though -- and a ridiculously happy ending (whether or not Tantz has one in mind).

Well, I would NOT trust Miyazaki with it I love most of his movies, but I have the feeling Without Moonlight would need a grittier style. Since Satoshi Kon has sadly passed away, I would recommend Kenji Kamiyama (GitS SAC, Eden of the East).

Haha. Maybe so. I was thinking of mainstream American animation (which Miyazaki is semi-part of since Disney latched onto a couple of movies), but American animation companies suck at deep stories. XD -- and never invest in them either.

Ah. Well, I believe American companies could in principle do it, it just needs the right context. For a relatively unknown property, chances might be better than for something that has to be watered down for the mainstream audience. You're right, it's quite disappointing that American animation companies so rarely take chances and try to tell serious, deep stories. I believe they are able to - they're just never commissioned to do it.

excellent work from the both of you! abt man, totally catches the feel of that gritty WW2 undergriound resistance dealy. i adore Basil and fotis (if Bones would be considered my son, these guys'd be me nephews. ) and ya portray them just perfectly. hell, i might try to steal ya for a trade some time.

Thank you so much! You know, I'm a bit embarrassed I've never gotten around to drawing Bones. I've wanted to draw him literally for years! But yeah, an art trade might be some added incentive

Nice! Your gritty style reminds me of some late 80s/early 90s indie comics, especially Simon Bisley! I'd love to see your take on Bombshell... I think she has that gritty edge to her, and I'd love to see it brought out. I don't have a proper reference sheet for her, but you can just search my gallery for "Bombshell", there should be loads and loads. And there's the comic, of course! [link]

HOLY COW!

That is just stunningly, absolutely STUNNINGLY amazingly fabulously overwhelmingly AWESOME!

I'd need a thesaurus to properly gush over this, you just depicted the whole feel, essence and scope of the comic perfectly. What can I say that will convey how much I love this one?

And Basil DOES smoke, he smokes a pipe now, as it is easier to handle with one hand, but he used to roll 'em, just like you show him here Love Fotis' attentive expression and the whole atmosphere of plotting, Basil's very serious expression, speaking to Fotis seriously like an equal, it's just exactly what their interaction and relationship is like, so well done!

And don't get me started on the barrel rack.

I love this, love love love love this.

I would SO keep making trades with you!

Haha! I didn't think the day would come that words would fail you

Thank YOU very, very much. Your gushing makes for some excellent reward! I just meant to deliver something about as neat as what you had drawn up for me. Which meant I had to do my best Also, I really admire your whole personality, and since this comic is one of your treasured ways of expressing it, I approached it with due care.

Actually, I drew this a few days after I had read the comic, and I couldn't actually tell whether I had really SEEN Basil smoke, or whether that was my imagination. Maybe someone rolled a cigarette here for him? And your description fits my intentions of capturing Basil's and Fotis' relationship a 100%, which, again, is great to hear!

BTW, if you're gonna have a pin-up section in an upcoming printed issue, I'd be happy to send you a hi-res of this.

And yes, I'd certainly be open for another art trade with you! I would need some time though, since work has been piling up. Well, it never really stops piling up, but it sometimes makes turnaround times longer

Thank you so much! I'm so happy you feel that way, and it really honours me.

Basil smokes his pipe while he's giving Diomedes that pep talk in the abandoned brewery I bet that any of the kids (particularly Anna) would love to roll a cig for him, he just tends not to ask, it reminds him he needs to ask you see.

Volume one of WM is going to have the first three chapters more or less, i.e. all the events that bring us up to where the prologue begins. So yes, All the best fan artwork will go there with due permission and credit Needless to say yours has a place in that volume already!

I am so ON regarding a second trade I also need to work through some stuff but the moment I am able (around the end of August I think) I will be happy to draw some more for you

You did a really great job at creating that atmosphere, really does look very isolated and urgent. Love the expression on Basil's face and the light in Fotis' hair, too!
