Description
Once upon a time, he was an excitable little boy who would do anything to get you to notice him. He put giant beetles in your randsel and made you cry. He stole food from your bento and got you into time outs when the teacher caught you fighting with him. He always inched closer to play with you after the others had left like he hadn’t spent the whole day disturbing you.
You were friends with Satsuki long before she introduced that teasing boy with bright eyes and an infectious smile – Aomine Daiki. Together you watched his natural athleticism knockout adults on the basketball court as he grew the teen who made your heart sing with a long gaze.
It had hurt when you saw the telltale signs of apathy that took hold of him while he and Satsuki attended Teikou. Being in another middle school, there wasn’t much you could have done about it. Somewhere along the way you had let things slide and it wasn’t till your last conversation that you realized how bad it was. It was then you caught the curtailed sorrow in his brusque voice as he stated,
“The only one who can beat me is me, ____. You aren’t needed here.”
His rejection left a bitter taste which even blaming yourself for leaving him in such troubled times didn’t assuage. The sight of his fragile frame with shoulders bent in defeat; his words echoed through your mind. Having decided you had dwelled on the friendship gone sour for long enough, you shook your head and shut your eyes in a bid to quieten the memories.
You cursed at the thrashing Aomine gave Kuroko’s team on the court during their first match. Just one more match, you thought feverishly. But when Aomine lost the second, your heart still heaved with sympathy for him. While you were glad that he had been proven wrong, you knew how much he loved to win.
Determined to slip away before Satsuki got wind of your presence, you left the stands. As you wove past the crowd and headed for a quiet spot, you mentally convinced yourself that you had looked your fill for a lifetime. The click clack of your shoes reverberated in the crisp night air as your feet carried on-wards. Unconsciously, you headed for an empty court you hung out at as a trio. The closer you got, the deeper you delved into melancholic listlessness. Once there, you sat in the center of the court, legs crossed and time drifted from you like a drunken sailor-man of old.
“I wish I could hear his voice one last time though”, your voice shook with longing and broke off into a hoarse sigh at the last word.
“____.”
“Aomine-kun,” you didn’t not bother to turn but replied; convinced it was a trick of sound. The silence that followed confirmed your assumption so you continued.
“Say, how easy was it to cut ties with me?”
“It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.”
“Well, being a teenager you can’t have done all that much,” you jested dryly.
You heard a grouchy huff of irritation before a figure loomed in front of you. You gasped and moved back but it. No. He crouched down and leaned in close.
“Don’t ignore me, ___ and stop being glib about my feelings.”
Your heart leaped in your mouth. Goosebumps spread across your skin at his proximity. You leaned forward like a missile that was homing in on his heat signature. Aomine looked relieved but sorrow remained stamped in his features. Unable to endure the rising silence, you cleared your suddenly dry throat. Then threw caution to the wind and asked with a raised eyebrow,
“So? Are you here to say loved me too all along?” At that he glanced away and muttered gruffly
“Idiot, don’t ask something like that so easily.” You shoved down the disappointment gripped you and made a move to get up. However, Aomine pulled you flush against him and whispered,
“I always have, ____. I just didn’t want you to see me fall any lower. Forgive me”.
A shiver of happiness ran through you. It prompted you to return the embrace.
“I forgive you but you’re in boyfriend detention till I’m convinced you won’t do something stupid like that again, Daiki.” Aomine chuckled darkly. He knew you would put him through the paces. He found he didn’t mind at all.
