For MLP-ATG-Alumni Week 136-Theme: "Asian Ponies / Year of the Horse"Β

//Edit2: The original bmp-file was accidentally transformed to only 8bit-bmp and then converted to jpeg after the upload. I reuploaded it with a higher quality jpeg version.

I love this japanese art. I don't know how this style is called, but I simply love it. I bought some new brushes and paper by Daler Rowney (don't know it's full name) and wanted to try some more watercolour and india ink stuff with them. So this weeks theme was just perfect and I took the opportunity to try a drawing with a similar style, something I wanted to try for a long time. Due to the fact that the paper is white ("whiter" than the other one I have) I had to fake the paper colour . Could have been better, but in the end I'm very happy with this picture. Especially for a first attempt.

And if I have enough spare time the other mane characters will follow.

Some of the test drawings (there were quite a lot this time) will follow to the scrap section tomorrow I think.

//Edit: Sketches will follow later, was home late today. Additionally, I remembered the critiques function and why not? Maybe I will enable it for some of my older drawings as well.

Wow, those colors are quite vibrant for a traditional piece. Great job!

Thanks you. The pencils I used here allow for some nice colors. I still try to combine them with the normal watercolors I bought a while ago.

Ah, ok. That sounds like the Inktense pencils I used to use.

I use Faber Castell "Albrecht DΓΌrer" watercolor pencils to be exact. I wanted to start with pencil drawings and keep the option for watercolor drawings and paintings. So they seemed pretty good.

That sounds pretty good. That is the appeal of watercolor pencils to me too. ^^

:33< it's called 'sumi e'

Are you sure? It seems that Sumi-e only allows black ink but no colors. Otsu-e for example looks like what I had in mind (especially the Falkner picture) or Nishiki-e (especially the Torii Kiyonobu picture), but I don't know if those terms also describe the art style.

Nice water colorin'!
Would have been great to get that highlight in her tail throughout the rest of her mane, too.

Thank you.

I agree with you. Unfortunately I started with the mane and did the tail with the highlight later. So there was no turning back. I even considered to color the hightlight afterwards to make mane and tails look similar, but liked it too much. More planning ahead next time. ^^
