Description

Hello, world. I’m acc1dental-zhunatic, who you may also know as mr-imagin8ion, or destined2destroyus, or paws-for-effect. I’m sure you remember me from all the fan art that I haven't made yet. This is my first entirely official television show scorecard.

CONSPECTUS: “SpongeBob Square Pants” refers to the story of an anthropomorphic yellow sea sponge who “lives in a pineapple under the sea” in a city-state known as Bikini Bottom, and works as a fry cook at an establishment known as the “Crusty Crab”. The cast includes: Bob himself, the aforementioned childishly optimistic sea sponge; Patrick, an uneducated starfish and Bob’s ally; Squidward, an octopus made of depression, who is annoyed by the childish optimism of Bob and Patrick; and Krabs, the crustacean that is Bob’s manager.
HISTORY: SpongeBob has existed since 1999, one of the only survivors from that era. I’ve watched SpongeBob since birth. You almost certainly have watched it too. The only people who do not know about it are those that have not yet been born. I’ve liked it, as children do, for as long as I’ve watched it. I had made a few scorecards of it before, but none of them until now were entirely my own opinion. It has been on the air for a very long time: in fact, the 535th episode premiered while this scorecard was in post-production.

REVIEW:
CHARACTERS: I have mostly nothing to say about the characters. Bob and Patrick entertain me, but as I grow older, I relate to Squidward more. As any fan would tell you, the characters’ personalities become more exaggerated as time goes on. The dumb become dumber, and the greedy become greedier. I don’t mind, because I didn’t care or even notice until the fans made me know.
PLOT: The plot is pleasant. It feels very “Nickelodeon” and very “late 1990s”. It has lasted so long that I know it is doing something right. The tone and mood have escalated over the years from normal to hilarious, which is my favorite mood. And it may be the only thing left in the world that still remembers the true meaning of animation. Although, if the most eminent children’s show in the world is about talking marine invertebrates who work in the fast food business, it is a good indicator of how weird this generation is.
VISUALS AND AUDIO: The best part! The visuals and audio were only all right before 2016. The colors were bright, and it had numerous funny faces that inspired hundreds of memes, including Primitive SpongeBob, Mocking SpongeBob, Handsome Squidward, Surprised Patrick, Confused Krabs, “No, this is Patrick!”, “MOAR”, wumbo, et cetera, et more cetera. That was the best part before 2016. But after 2016, the visuals and audio became fabulous. Current SpongeBob is the squishiest, stretchiest, most fluid, most entertaining to look at, wackiest series that has survived to this day. Sometimes, the fun visuals take up more airtime than the plot. In fact, there was an entire episode dedicated to the fact that this series has become just a big walking sight gag. I’m talking about “SpongeBob in Randomland”, whose abundance of visuals made it the only... well, nearly the only episode of any series I’ve ever seen to get higher than a perfect score.
FANS: This series’ other fans are rather opinionated. Just like the fans of every long-running series, they love the old episodes very much and they hate the new episodes very much. There are a number of episodes from newer seasons that they consider “cruel”. I actually don’t mind some/most of those episodes. On a nerdometric scale of 0 to 5 (0 meaning every fan watches it for the art and 5 meaning every fan watches it analytically), this series gets a NERD-2, or mild nerdiness.
DISADVANTAGES: This series has very few disadvantages. However, it is annoying to hear the characters cry frequently or express strong enough anger. Another main problem with this series is its scarcity: new episodes currently air at a rate of about once every few months.
SEASONS: Any fan knows that SpongeBob has three eras: the good, the bad, and the wacky. The “good” (seasons 1-4) is actually my least favorite era, due to the many episodes in it that are flawed or severely flawed. The “bad” (seasons 5-8) is actually better than the good from my point of view, which is most likely because it’s the era that I grew up with. The “wacky” (seasons 9-present) is obviously my favorite era of all, because it is the most fun era to look at. If I were to grade the eras, the good would be Satisfactory, the bad would be Good, and the wacky would be Excellent.

CONCLUSION: SpongeBob is a very satisfying series, and it is becoming more satisfying as the years go on. This series is Good, and it’s getting better. I would recommend it – not all of it, but as the years go on, I would recommend more of it.
