Description In which I try to do shit but totally fails on how faces work? I mean- it isn't too bad, but I don't know if I like it or no. Like I didn't get it the way I wanted, but it kinda sorta looks like a girl in my class? idek. She's cute, but it wasn't what I wanted my drawing to look like kinda. I'm still a total noob when it comes the the one-layer-style, but this is like my second try, so give me some space. If you have any constructive criticism, feel free to share!

Other than that, I wish you a wonderful rest of the day!

Hey! Here from ProjectComment and after reading some of the other comments I'm curious what you're looking for in your comment about "how faces work?"Β

When I first looked at this, I noticed absolutely nothing wrong with any proportions here. The reason for that is because I am accustomed to looking at cartoons of many styles. One thing that is common with most cartoons is that the heads are disproportionately large compared to actual human anatomy. Personally, I like that fact. I think it allows the artist to better display expressions and emotions than on a precise human face. To me, even though this face isn't showing much in the way of emotional expression it still is more attractive to me than a realistic face.Β Β

For only your second try at a single layer piece I give this major props. I've done a number of single layer attempts and none of it has ever been something I wasn't completely embarrassed by. I'd have to say my favorite part of your coloring here is the hair on the top of her head, right where it changes direction from the bangs. It is mostly white there but I can see just the faintest of pink there which adds just enough distiction and yet still gives that glowing effect that surrounds her.Β

It's all a matter of style in this case. Were you looking for an exact proportions? I think she came out looking beautiful. It makes me think of a number of characters, Raven (Teen Titans), or maybe a bang baby from Static Shock. I imagine her eyes have as much of a story to tell as would the northern lights if they could speak of all the sights they've seen through the centuries.

First of all, thank you so much!
I have been trying to get more realistic than I have been the past years, but I still fancy the cartoonized style. I've been told, and noticed, that some of the proportions of the face and the angle and such could have been done better, but there are some critiques that I'm sorta like "what?" because the intent wasn't to make it down right realistic, but rather create my own style in between that and the cartoony style. I do take the critiques to heart regardless though, but things like "her neck is a bit too long" is completely because of my preferred style. I am so glad that there are someone out here appreciative of the cartoon style!<:Β

The awesome thing about art is that you really don't have to impose any rules upon yourself unless you want to! Though it may be rewarding to try and paint everything on one layer, it can definitely be helpful to use multiple layers at first at least, if you're uncomfortable with doing it all on one layer; and that's really just taking advantage of the digital medium. I would advise don't restrict yourself to just one layer just yet!

There are a few confusing things about this piece, and the first reason is regarding proportions of the human head. Β I'm sure you know, eyes usually fall right around the middle of the head. However, when I drew over this painting to see where the top of the head would be, it would lie right around were the top of her hair is, and this is a little problematic because hair has volume. Hair won't lie flat on the surface of the head, it'll extend up a bit above the scalp. The eyes are a litttttle far apart. Lastly well, it's more of an issue of perspective, but it's confusing: it appears that's we're looking straight at her, at eye level, but... at the same time, we're looking up at her, because we can see the bottom of her nose, but we're not looking up at her because we can't see the underside of her jaw or chin on anything else... so it's a little confusing, but I know we really should be able to see too much of her nostrils or the underside of her nose. But in any case, I think studying human facial structure would be very beneficial!

And I guess further on, there's a lack of contrast in this piece, which some artists do take advantage of low-contrast situations but if that's what you were going for, it might need a little more work. Well, the background colors are kinda splotchy, and they're composed of many different values. Values, of course, being what the light value is of a certain area when that area is turned to black and white, and it's super important to pay attention to. Because and the background and most everything except for the hair is right around the same value range. Now assuming, the character is the point of interest, you might want to darken the background to add more contrast and really draw more attention to your character. I think that would be very very helpful to the presentation of this piece, as well as possible adding more defined, darker shadows: especially under her bangs, under her nose, around the sides of her face, on her upper teeth, you know, just all those places where shadows would probably be.

I don't know, beyond that... keep doing what you're doing and such. Hope you appreciate the critique and I hope you keep painting!

That is really pretty! I love the colors your chose. The colors are not to hard, not to bright, not to dark, they match, and they give off a soft feeling. You did a great job on the shading and detail. There are enough details to tell what it is but not too much where it would be confusing. The shading is well done but there could be a bit more since she is glowing. More shading could go above her eyes, under her ear, and where her bangs are. This is because her hair is glowing.

I also love how you added a little scene inside her. I love seeing pictures like that. The little scene is beautiful and well detailed. However the shoulders seem a little uneven. The one on the right (in third person) seems bigger than the one on the left. I know she is looking off to the side but her right eye (also in third person) seems to be inward a little (very little) too much. It's still a nice picture though.

Keep up the good work ! Β

First of: Beautiful! I love the color palette you used. It's colorful, but somehow still soft. It made sure that this painting caught my eye even as a thumb, which is a really good thing on such a busy website. Aside from that the drawing itself is lovely too. I have no idea how you came up with the idea of painting the Aurora on her skin, but I like it ^^ I'm impressed that you did all of this in one layer. I'm experimenting with semi-realism too, but I always try to work on layers. Make life so much easier.... I really like the way you painted her eyes.Β

Now to the critique part ^^ In general the anatomy looks alright, but I have the impression you payed a lot more attention to the anatomy of the face than the rest of the body. The neck is too long (or the shoulders start too low), and there is no definition of for example the collar bones. That last part might be a conscious decision on your part though, if you wanted to focus more on the painting on her skin than her body. I like how you've sculpted her face. There's definitely some mistakes there, but I know how difficult it is. The two things that are most noticeable for me are the position of the nose, and the lips. When you look at the eyes, the nose seems to be off-center. And her lips look a bit flat, which is odd because the rest of the face is so well sculpted. Like you've sort of forgotten it. I wish I could give you good advice on how to fix it, but I always have trouble with drawing faces in perspective. I suggest you have a look at some of the drawing references available on DA to get an idea of what it should look like.Β

So, one last thing and then I'm done ^^ I really like your use of light here. It's bright, but it's not too much. However, with such a strong light, I would expect the shadows to be a bit darker and more defined too.Β

Well, that was it I hope my comment was useful. Good luck with your future practice!

I gotta start this comment by saying OH MY GOD, please teach me how to paint like that, because even though you said this was your second time trying out this one-layer style, your technique is flawless. Everything, from the concept to design, color scheme, gradients, glowing effects, everything here is perfect and she looks absolutely adorable. I've been trying to do something like this for a while (refer to this endless parade of space and white haired girls:Β fav.me/d9lp2rx , fav.me/d99fqog , fav.me/d93ph52 /nah, I'm just kidding XD I actually mean the one-layer type thing), and I gotta say you completely nailed it. I especially love her eyes, her hair and the choice of colors (blue and pink has gotta be my favorite match <3), plus the northern lights landscape looks incredible.
There's only one noteworthy issue, though (and tbh it's not even a real issue, because this could be a marking of style, but still in my personal opinion the piece would look even better if you changed this): the head to body proportion. And as long necked real person myself, I disagree with whoever commented here earlier that the neck is too long. I actually think the whole head looks a bit compressed and she might look cuter if you just stretched it a bit vertically (in a way that the chin covers a bit more of her long neck).Β Aside from that, I can only give you one other minor tip that is making the background a bit darker in order to bring her out more.
While understandably these things are pretty hard to get right when working with a single layer, they could be easily sorted by tweaking the final image a little on photoshop o/
I hope this helps XDΒ  Β

I really adore this more than you know! (color scheme and character design)
I love the way that you let the night sky creep up her neckline. Good use of highlights with the blues and purples. The bob of a hair cut is super Kawaii - doesn't mater if you used reference of not you capture it well.

Two suggestions would be to add more value to the hair and face. It is easy to stay in the range because of the style, but would make this image clearer. If you use Photoshop have your very top layer a black and white / grey-scale. then you can see where you need to go lighter and dark from a subjective colorless view.

Keep up the great work!

Wow! this looks very nice! you did a nice job with the colors and light glow. Some suggestions are a slightly sorter neck, and make the nose look like it's going straight up instead of slanting. Anyway, have a nice day!

Thank you for feedback! I suppose the neck could be a tad shorter, but the nose was actually modeled after a picture. It could be a bit raised, yes, but it isn't too far from the original picture. Thank you anyway!

It looks great! But remember that when drawing people, especially when drawing off someone, angles and structure are very important. Shape of the eyes and lips and nose and jaw and cheeks and face o3o in stylized drawings it is even more difficult to accomplish similarities, just practice in incorporating facial features.

Thats all I have, but it looks amazing nonetheless Β ^3^

Thank you for the feedback! Is there something specific you're referring to? <: Cause I kinda felt like the eyes were too far apart. I placed my hand over individual parts to see how they looked separate. When I did that it seemed fine, but when I looked on the overall picture something seemed off with the face. I couldn't find a way to fix this however, so I just left it as it was. I'm still not used to this style, I'm afraid.

Angie-TheCat In reply to Ace1999 [2016-01-03 17:15:22 +0000 UTC]

well whatever the style, the distance between the eyes should be the length of one eye for one o3o the distance looks a dash off here, again this is stylized so I can't really say this for sure, but the nose could be a bit wider. You can look up face structure at various angles if you want references or more details ;3; also try to flip the canvas if you can whenever you are drawing to see mistakes, especially if you are drawing for a while it helps bring out unnoticed mistakes.

(Thank you for the fave ^3^ )
