I won't automatically assume grooming, but I will assume people using kids as cannon fodder in a culture war for self validation. In other words, I see it as more selfish and self righteous than sinister. And a bit short sighted.There are groomers, there are well meaning people who just want to reduce homo/trans/whatever phobia. But most are going to be partially in the middle. They want to feel validated, and they're forcing children to accept them at a personal level from a young age instead of just teaching kids respect in general.
