Description + Even though our shoot was really meant for the couple, they wanted to squeeze in a family portrait or two. Considering I've never really done family portraits, I couldn't complain and was eager for the practice. This was easily my favorite of the bunch and a style I'd like to further pursue. I mean, who wouldn't want a fun shot like this of their kids? (Don't answer that.)

+ From the same session of [link] and [link]

+ Sorry for the mediocre logo placement.

+ Production: Flash bounced...down, I think. Or maybe aimed to the left with the on-flash reflector? I honestly don't remember. PS Editing was an x-process effect minus the blue hues. (And therefore, really, just some contrast and color boost.)

+ Enjoy!

hey mate, i have a question on this photo.
where did you "checked" the light? checked because i cant remember the ord in english now...

you did it for the background (beach) and let the flash fill in the people?, or you checked the light in the back couple?
how did the flash had power to reach back couple without overexpose the lady in front left?

and how was your light meter (thats the word ) matricial, point (what point, where).

thanks in advance for your answers mate, you would really help a lot if you could enlighten me with this!

cheers, love your work!

I really wish I could provide you with a more thorough answer. All I know is that I aimed the flash to the left, maybe used the on-flash reflector to bounce it back onto the couple. (I'm guessing I set the flash up by a stop or two to get the extra light.) And probably set the camera to underexpose by a stop or so to balance the light from the flash and still get the background exposed properly.

For my focusing, I probably either used the single center point or all 9 points. As for light metering, I rarely ever change that setting and I'm not even sure what mode it is that I use. Sorry.

I wish my family portrait was like this. This is so much better than the stiffly posed ones!

That would make a good picture for an advert. For someone who isn't used to family portraits, this turned out really frickin' sweet.

What kind of lens did you use for this? Some sort of fish-eye?

Yep, a Canon 15mm f/2.8 fisheye lens.

Yeah, "Who wouldn't want..." is right. This is one of the most awesome family portraits I've ever seen. People should take pictures like this more often.

"People should take pictures like this more often." No no, because if they did, then I wouldn't have a commodity product. You're fired.

Very likeable shot. I love the different expressions and the fish eye effect The colors are also nice and cool how the 3 to the right have white and the 2 left have that navy blue... also they make us wonder what's so interesting outside the frame.

Haha, for a family portrait this isn't bad at all, I like it a lot, it's humorous and has what it needs, shows everyone in their very own unique way

Very good

That's a great picture! It's the kind of picture that you put right next to the serious posed one to show what your kids are really like.
