Description

Ah. My yearly tradition. For all those who know me (or even don't know me) will know or learn that I have a tradition of making creatures based around Christmas:

It's kinda mah thing.

But this year I decided to go with a bit more purpose towards a Christmas creature and used this as a idea booster:

My dear friend is holding a spooky Christmas contest and frankly, more people should be involved!

Now for my creature-

This is simply referred to as a 'Yule beast'.  For as long as there has been a winter festival that focused on rewarding the good behaviour of children, there is always a punishment for those who don't behave. These days the punishment is warning of simply not receiving presents, but once it was the warning that creatures of the dark winter nights would beat them, provide coal or worse- whisk the naughty child away.

The Yule beast is an accumulation of these stories. A personification of a childhood winter fear.  Many centuries ago, it may have been a dark winter's night which would take away bad children on Christmas night. It then grew into an icy personification of the dark night itself.  A creature used to warn children of the snow and ice.

As presents and coal become a part of the stories, the beast became thorns and ice that stole bad children, leaving only coal for the presents to find. As the stories change so does the Yule beast.

Today it's a brightly coloured personification that still bears a darker touch to connect it to its origins. A creature of bright colours that attract children with its festive look, only for its body to twist, contort  and then  take away the wicked children, leaving g behind only a pile of coal...

Yes I've been watching and reading 'The Hogfather'. Frankly I think it should be REQUIRED reading this time of year. Utter brilliance.

And yes I made a worm- creature, with holly-bat colony, which eats naughty children and poops coal. That's what I DO.

Any who, Please all have merry Christmas where ever you are, and enjoy the New Year. I'm off to have more mulled wine and mice pies because 'tis the season to be ludicrously PHAT.

This is all done in 'Art Rage' btw, my new utter favourite drawing tool. Got for my by for my birthday early this month.

when I see the thumbnail, I feel some of the Christmas mood, and the body is shining, then I expect the enjoyable Christmas creature. I guess the children are interested in the brilliant appearance without doubt like me.

Definitely! Nothing better to get attention then bright colours. Especially in a snowy landscape.

I'm suddenly reminded of that duck from Babe when he starts going "CHRISTMAS MEANS CARNAGE!!!"

lol, I think any old folk tale usually goes back to some form of carnage. Humans are forever morbidly fascinated.
