Description This was an order for NSHC. She wanted the horse to look silvery, so I tried to do this by desaturating and recolouring in teal and gold. A bajillion layers went into this: betta fins for the mane and tail, some sort of salmon for the flippers, scales from a variety of fishes, a dorsal fin from some tropical fish whose name I can't pronounce became the forelock, and the wings are from a flying fish. The idea was that the horse is balancing on a fountain of water coming below. Overall, I'm happy with how this turned out though I'm not too keen on the background.

It's actually pretty simple. Just find a picture of a fish whose scales you like. Overlay the scales over the parts of the horse you want to be scaley, and then erase or mask the parts of the scale layer that fall outside of the horse. Then put a layer property on the scale layer (I think I used overlay) and you're all set! You can still tweak the opacity and colour settings to get the effect you want. Let me know if that helps.

oh, thanks very much!! I've already tried a few things with the overlay and thay worked well, but this seemed to beautiful to be just overlay*looks and pic and dribbles some more*. I have to cover a whole horse in mother pearl, and it's really hard to find a piece of mother of pearl bigger than two thumbs. i'll tell you how it worked out. thanks for the help.

I'm sure it will turn out great!

Mother of pearl sounds like a real challenge to do... I don't think it'll be easy to overlay source photos onto a horse to make the coat look like that. Maybe you could try digitally painting it on? Sometimes it helps to look at source photos of what you want and carefully paint it in, rather than photomanipulating it. It's more convenient because you can then get exactly what you want.

Isn't mother of pearl more of a solid shiny colour rather than scales?

yeh, that is my problem, i tried bleniding it in every way over but it doesn't really look like i want it, not i tried to blend the horse over the mother of pearl and that's working a bit better. it was because i though that the colors of the horse also came from blending that i thought i could give it a try. hum, plus i can't really draw it in cause i have no tablet. i'm goon enough to smudge tails and manes perfectly with the mouse, but i wouldn't be able to draw with it, as good as i might be with a pen, with a mouse i'm woth nothin, lol. At the max i postpone this project to when i get a tablet. already for the idea i have of the background i'll be needing a tablet since i intend to draw the horse looking from a high rock on a mountain down to a sea of clouds and an ivory city peaking out of the clouds. dunno what kind of light to put as i don't want neither the yellow of the sun nor the darness of night or red of sunset. i'll probs make some fantastic planet/ star thingy or so. gwah, i think i'll really need to postpone this, never done stuff like that
