That is a nice looking cane! It would be cool if you could post a close-up photo of it.

You can see a very close shot in my gallery sub-folder, it magnifies as Trump might say "In a Big Way."

Color me surprised as I don't think too many people read anything I've written outside of those viewers I've actually asked.  Really glad you took the time, and thanks for doing so.   I was just viewing your recent upload of new pics and just so glad to have you on my watch list, I so enjoy your captures.

Wow!  You made that cane AND your own tools?!  Color me absolutely amazed!  You're awesome!  My late father was into woodworking and carving, he had some serious talent, and so do you.  Very impressive, indeed!

Wow this is really good and clearly has a lot of effort put into it, what tools do you use?

I used hand held carving tools on everything except the mouth and the area around the glass eyes (purchased them from a taxidermist online.) and I made my own tools to burn the scales in place. ( Took 3 lag bolts and fashioned the heads into three different sizes of scales and heated them with a propane torch to sear the scale impressions with.)

I have an extensive collection of dremel carving bits and a fair collection of large and small hand tools, but I do the majority of work with the hand held tools.  It's not that I'm old fashioned I just work better with the hand tools.

You can see a better close up in my gallery if you haven't went there.

Wow, so you actually make your own tools, I just use as I mentioned before a special carving chainsaw, a blow torch, sanders and to add the detail I use special hand grinders where you can add different heads of stone depending on what type of detail I am adding to my carving. On some of my owls and bear heads I use some special black marble type balls for the eyes although usually I just use the grinder to make holes and add the detail with a blow torch.

The types of tools I create depend greatly on the effect that I wish to get, if I worked on a larger scale as you do I would do my best to acquire the rotary grinder and bits that are normally sold for industrial use.  The dremel grinder I use is a small tool and can overheat when used for mor than 20 minutes but it is great for small jobs.  I have a 3/4inch x 6inch x 4foot piece of Mahogany that I want to do a relief of wolves standing just outside a forests edge on a precipice and a eagle flying close by, the background will be a valley with a river running through it but that's a job that in yet for the future.

I'm not very fast at anything, I do it mostly for the pure enjoyment of it.

Alive and well, relatively speaking that is.  Missed your craziness of late.  Thanks for peeking in, I am currently working on another cane but only have 30hrs in it so far expecting somewhere around 120 by the finishing of it.

Wow. Lots of effort into that, huh? I'd love to see a picture of it when it's finished. Good luck with making it. Do you do a lot of woodworking stuff? I've considered getting into it a bit. I have a few projects I'd love to get around to. For example, a TARDIS (Doctor Who) and Arwen's sword (LOTR). But I'm not too experienced at getting symmetry and details, yet. I know my way around tools well enough, so hopefully, all I need is practice.

I will be posting pics of the cane once done.  I used to do a lot more wood projects, and truthfully I will be increasing those again as I really have a love for it.  If you do get a project going don't rush it, wood is not as forgiving as paper or cyberspace.  Glad to hear from you again.
