Description Year: 2011
Client: DC Comics
Media: Media: Pencil, PITT Pen and COPIC marker on Strathmore Drawing paper, then colored with Adobe Photoshop CS2.

I was very nervous doing this variant cover to ACTION COMICS #900. ACTION COMICS has been in continuous publication since 1938, and with the printed periodical going the way of the dodo, I was awed to be contributing to the 900th issue.

I've been trying to figure out what other American periodicals have been in continuous monthly publication as long. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC? TIME? It staggers the mind.

My idea? A variation on the classic 'Superman breaking chains' image started by Joe Shuster, echoed brilliantly by Neal Adams in the classic "Kryptonite... No More!" issue, and many others. It's an iconic image, and done correctly, I think one can dip into iconic waters without drowning in nostalgia.

A fun cover, altogether; I just have to return Superman's hair to Alec Baldwin now.

Just brilliant.

I liked the Neal Adams cover, but it was tied to one of the dumbest storylines to ever feature Superman.Β

Β Mr Hughes, I have been an admirer of your work for some years now and I have very deliberately posted my first expression of this appreciation beneath this image so that you will understand that while I rather enjoy your depictions of the finest female forms imaginable, what REALLY won my admiration was your ability to compose and to construct images such as this - pinups magnificent in their own right without so much as the faintest hint of hanky-panky (and in this case an homage that may well excel the original cover).

Β The fact that you STILL cook up the tastiest cheesecake in the business is just a bonus, so far as I'm concerned!Β

Let Supes keep the hair, Alec doesn't need it no more. XD Love the chain links hitting us as they shatter! *feels like eyes should be poked out by them*

I've been so 'all over the place', I didn't even see this cover till I couldn't get it anymore.
This cover does exactly what you intended. I see Shuster, Adams, (and Adams) all wrapped up tight.
Congratulations on a job greatly done.

Always nice to see a great artist do a version of that cover. Sometimes you never know when a cover is going to work, but that one just came together in just a few hours.

Excellent job, Think I first started reading Action Comics about 1972, don't know if your going to like this comment or not but your cover looks much the same as the covers of the Action Comics I was reading in the 70's

i think action comics womps both national geo n time as both newsmags took huge breaks in publishing. time went under for almost a decade and only got back on the ball with special one shot issues.
