Description Teen Titans Pin-up; Pencil, Photoshop CS4.

This is sort of a "Ultimate Best-Of" shot, using my favorite characters from the classic Titans, the Young Justice comic (died before its time), and the Young Justice cartoon:

(Left to Right): Kid Flash (Bart Allen), Cyborg, Starfire, Beast Boy, Miss Martian, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Superboy, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Robin (Tim Drake), Raven.

So, seriously--how amazing is the Young Justice show, right? Every episode I watch blows me away all over again. And if you'd asked me five years ago if I would EVER like the infinitely stupid Miss Martian character, I'd have told you to go jump in a lake. But they made her a great character, and I can hardly believe it.

I just wishwishWISH that there was ANYWHERE in DC comics that you could go to get that same feeling and depth and especially the personality and character that YJ brings out week after week. If somebody who didn't read comics but loved that show went into a comic shop and picked up the Teen Titans book, they'd slap themselves in the face and run away. Seriously.

Here's what's at the core of YJ that is missing in so many comics these days: Heart. It's about the relationships of these kids, their friendships, their struggles. It's funny (genuinely), but still handles serious material without taking itself TOO seriously, and yet without making everything jokey and insincere. Where can I go in DC (or Marvel) comics for a book like that? A book about real people I can root for and care about, who just happen to be super-heroes?

Guess I'll just have to keep making The Uniques if I want such a comic to exist, and releasing it online for only 99 cents per issue (with the first issue free).

New to Deviant and accidentally stumbled upon this post.Β  Love this print, picked it up at Grand Rapids Comic Con in October.Β  This print now hangsΒ in my oldest daughter's room.Β Huge Young Justice and Teen Titans fan; these are the shows that got my daughters hooked on comics.Β I even dig Teen Titans Go; which many die-hards hate.Β  I think people forget about the primary demographic that GO was shooting for, aka: my 7 year old daughter, who finds it hilarious.

I think the issue with GO is that it was the wrong show at the wrong time. Too many people were upset at Young Justice's cancellation, and the audience that would have been most psyched to see the old TT show return were too old to enjoy GO in its purest form. So you took your two largest built-in audiences and kind of flipped them the bird and said "we don't really care about you or what you like." It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with GO itself (though I think it could have been done in a way that makes both young kids and older enjoy it equally), it just came at a time where wounds were too fresh for it to be embraced.

It's Bart, actually. I decided not to go with the Titans who had grown out of the team and into other roles, so no Dick, Wally, Roy, or Donna. Cyborg and Starfire stayed because they're the mentors of the team, and Beast Boy is still such a kid anyway.

Is your description serious? Young Justice, to me, has to be DC's third worst show (the top 2 being Super Friends and the new Teen Titans Go) Superboy was as likable as a turd, Miss Martian was annoying as crap, they wasted the awesome Khary Payton on the extremely boring Aqualad, they made the extremely feisty and awesome Zatana into a pouty faced little girl, and made Superman look like a deadbeat dad, Justice League and Teen Titans 2003 were each a million times better than this, you want a comic based around heart and character interaction? Then buy Ultimate Fantastic Four vol.1, I just bought and got it on Thursday, and I would read it a thpundsand times than watch Young Justice again.

I'm trying to understand the mindset behind why anybody would bother making a post like this. You're basically walking into a stranger's space and trying to pick a fight. What's your "win" here? What do you gain from such a long-winded diatribe against something somebody else enjoys? Obviously you won't be changing anybody's mind, and you aren't phrasing your argument, such as it is, in a way that's trying to start an actual conversation about the pros and cons of a thing. You're just kind of flailing your arms and complaining to me. It's such a monumental waste of time and makes you look so bad in the process that I can't ever understand why somebody would do it.

1.seriously? Unlikable Superboy, annoying Miss Martian, wasting Khary Payton and deadbeat Superman aren't good reasons to not like Young Justice?
2.I was just looking at Teen Titans, saw this, thought it looked good, then I saw your description, and noticed how you said superhero stuff now lacks "heart" you'll also noticed that I recommended Ultimate Fantastic Four if you wanted a comic with good character interaction and emotion, and I also said that I my opinion Young Justice is one of DC's worst shows, I'd rather watch Teen Titans or Justice League, way better shows.

My daughter turned me on to Young Justice and, you're right, the story telling is fantastic. (I hadn't heard of Miss Martian before that.) For example, the "Superboy" story establishing his relationship to Superman early on in the series was great. As the group starts out the feeling of the tensions between the characters, yet the desire to stay together is palpable. Cool Stuff. Of course, your art work is fantastic also! The interactions between the characters via their facial expressions and body language makes this so much better than the typical pin-up!

Thank you. YJ is the kind of storytelling I really enjoy, and those kinds of stories are why I love these characters. It's also why a lot of my art tends to be more conversational than action-oriented, I think. I prefer the more personal, interactive moments of character rather than the explosive, chop-socky stuff.

If your Uniques will have that heart, I will gladly pay for the goodness.

Yeah. I'm still waiting on a Teen Titans movie. To bad they weren't Marvel, they'd probably have their own trilogy by now. Would have been interesting to see them in the Nolanverse.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to d4r1n [2014-09-27 01:25:15 +0000 UTC]

Never would've worked in the Nolanverse. The more "realistic" you take a superhero premise, the less acceptable the idea of young teenagers fighting crime becomes. There needs to be more of a wink and a smile in the nature of the film - like the way Marvel is doing their films, particularly as in Guardians o/t Galaxy. But DC/Warner refuses to allow happiness or fun in their superhero movies, sooo...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

d4r1n In reply to AdamWithers [2014-09-27 02:46:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've realized that as well, though I would have loved to see them in the same world as Heath Ledgers Joker, (the ultimate impossibility). I like some of the new DC movies. I actually really liked Man of Steel. Admittedly, I do understand the issues people had with it, and a lot of them I agree with, but overall I liked the movie, and I'm looking forward to seeing Dawn of Justice.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to d4r1n [2014-09-27 16:22:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm glad you can enjoy MoS. Dawn looks like it will probably be more of the same, which is fine for the people who liked that, but I fear it has little chance of healing the rift between people who enjoyed Man of Steel and people who felt like whoever that guy on-screen was, he wasn't Superman.
