Description Scene from the Grimm Brothers' fairytale 'The Six Swans'. It's one of my beloved stories written by them so I'll probably make some more illustrations to it in the nearest future ^^

This picture was supposed to be my entry for the Red Fairytale Contest in but I don't know if it is good enought and suitable. It is red and it is a fairytale and it looks quite nice but, but... (what?) well, I don't really know
fortunately I still have some time to think it over ^^

If you have time - read this tale, it's quite short

This is a story description:
Six brothers have been turned into swans by their evil stepmother. They can only take their human forms for fifteen minutes every evening. In order to free them, their sister must make six shirts out of starwort for her brothers, and neither speak nor laugh for six years. A king finds her doing this, is taken by her beauty and marries her. When the Queen has given birth to their first child, the King's wicked mother takes away the child and accuses the Queen, and again with the second and the third. The third time, the Queen is sentenced to be burned at the stake. On the day of her execution, she has all but finished making the shirts for her brothers; only the last shirt misses a left arm. When she is brought to the stake she takes the shirts with her, and when she is about to be burned, six swans come flying through the air. She throws the shirts over her brothers and they regain their human form, except for the youngest brother, who is left with a swan's wing instead of a left arm (in some versions she does not finish the sixth shirt in time, and the youngest brother is left as a swan.) The Queen, now free to speak, can defend herself against the accusations. Her mother-in-law is burned at the stake instead.

In this bold fragment, but in full-lenght story, the girl is sitting on a tree and making a shirt.

Exquisite.

There are a number of aspects to this painting that steal my soul. The first is certainly the theme - this beautiful fairy-tale has captured the imagination of multitudinous artists - suffice it to mention the author Juliet Marillier, which based her romance novel "Daughter of the Forest" on this enchanting tale of enchantment.

Secondly, and this is where the artist's talent is more palpable - is the style. The dame is working on a tree but the right side of the painting is left without a dominant feature. This is by no means a source of imbalance - rather it gives the artist the opportunity to include those dappled earthy tones of green and orange-brown which enrich the painting's autumn feel.

Lastly, and all of you should be able to tell what I'm going to say - is COLOUR. The array of colours in this painting is what allows it to exert a lasting influence on the imagination, a source of inspiration for the poetic/artistic soul. Who can resist the lure of that vibrant red in an equally entrancing fall-foliage background?

With its capture of the quintessential Celtic spirit and the use of a technique reminescent of the delicacy of a Japanese print, this painting is, for me, at the very zenith of an artist's achievement, a cipher for what breath-taking beauty colour and imagination can strive to create.

I love that story, it's one of my favourites too, so melancholic and mysterious. Never thought of her sitting in a tree, but this is a very beautiful picture in all.

I think this is a most beautiful piece. the pen work is so light and flowing, as are the watercolours. this truly has a fairy tale feel.

This is one of my most favorite stories. Not many people I know know this story. Beautiful work you have done. I think you should enter it into the contest. It's very good.

You could also call this painting The Silent Seamstress.

when I made the sketch I coloured the paper with a wet (hot!) teabag it makes funny big spots and the paper's colour looks a bit like an old one

This is a lovely painting, Adelaida, and there is a feeling of silence or removal about the Princess in the tree. (It's a Beautiful Tree - I would love to be able to sit in a tree like that!)
But ... the six swans is one of my favorite fairy tales too, and it is bleak and lonely for her. The nettles hurt her hands, she might lose the man she loves, she suffers ridicule and injustice - because she is totally focused on her goal of saving her brothers.
Am I making any sense?

Yes, you are and this is axactly whay I made a scene just before meeting the Prince - it's not so sad and scarry then
