Description
An older commission from 2008 for The Astor Chronicles series by Australian author Amanda Greenslade. One of the largest commissions I've ever painted, in terms of size. I'm not used to working at such a large resolution, so it took several weeks longer than I had planned on. Really awesome! I really like the way you made the clouds, the griffon, and the clothes: the colors are really brilliant, though it's odd that the boy's shoe and knee aren't sinking into the clouds at all, in contrast to the griffon's tail, which sinks through the clouds. It sort of detaches him from the clouds, in doing so, though it's barely noticeable. What I'd recommend working on are the hands and arms: the lower arms seem just a little too long, compared to the upper half, and it's clear that you had fun with the hands (since they're so detailed) but they seem bigger than his face (human hands are generally only a little smaller than their face, when compared), though that might just be the way they're situated. Also, where's the light coming from? It seems to be mostly backlighting on the griffon, but appears to come from multiple sources on the boy (backlighting and focused on his face, even though his shirt's dark). It gives it a sort of artificial-light appearance, despite not seeming to be supposed to be man-made. I really like the anatomy you gave the griffon, though, considering the mixture between lion and bird, though the face reminds me more of a horse in the posture and I had never considered griffons having horns
(Sorry if you don't like the critique, I'm one of those people who always wants others to point out the ways I could improve, even if I do it plenty enough on my own).

Thanks for the critique! This is a very old painting of mine from 2008, though, and yes, quite full of mistakes. This should have remained buried in the depths of my gallery; I'm not sure why it's suddenly resurfacing now. ^__^;;
The creature isn't a griffon--I'm not actually certain what it is--something of across between a dragon and pegasus, I think? The author of the books would know, I only painted the cover to her specifics.

No problem, I love to be helpful (and it helps to postpone homework, so double points!). I'm glad you're not annoyed at me, lots of people just explode about those who give them a critique, or something. I just saw it on the Deviantart homepage, when I was going to check my messages, so that's why I responded to it. Dunno how it got there, though *shrugs*
Ahh, I assumed it was a griffon, since the tags said "#Griffon " ^.^; Makes a lot more sense for it to be a dragasus, considering the anatomy
